This blog is now closed, thanks for joining us. These were the updates on the Costa Rica vs Germany World Cup 2022 match on Thursday, December 1.

  • Costa Rica XI: Navas, Vargas, Fuller (Bennette, 74′), Duarte, Oviedo (Wilson, 90+’), Waston, Borges, Tejeda (Contreras, 90+’), Aguilera (Salas, 46′), Venegas (Matarrita, 74′), Campbell.
  • Germany XI: Neuer, Raum (Gotze, 67′), Rudiger, Sule (Ginter, 90+’), Kimmich, Goretzka (Klostermann, 46′) Mueller (Havertz, 66′), Musiala, Gundogan (Fullkrug, 55′), Sane, Gnabry.
  • It’s all to play for in Group E as anyone could still qualify, but since the bottom two are facing each other, only one will be able to advance.
  • Following their shock win over Japan, Costa Rica could do with a point if the other result is favourable, but will need all three to be sure.
  • Germany are yet to win at this World Cup, but that will need to change if they are to give themselves a chance of advancing to the last 16. Even then, they will need Spain to prevent Japan from winning.

    That’s all we’ve got

We’re finishing up our coverage of that pulsating game and a chaotic Group E in general, with Spain progressing to face Morocco and Japan to take on Croatia in the last 16. We’ll be back tomorrow for the final round of group-stage matches.

    Until then folks.

In need of a recap on that one?

We thought so. Here’s our match report of that 4-2 classic:

    German inquest likely already begun

They may have won tonight but this elimination will not go down at all well at home. Germany is used to making the latter stages even when they don’t have a decent side and the talent at Hansi Flick’s disposal would make some rival managers’ eyes water.

    Take a bow

3 – Japan are only the third team in World Cup history to win two different games at a single edition in which they were losing at half-time, after Brazil in 1938 and Germany in 1970. Heroics. pic.twitter.com/PuAKio5wR7

A way better game than many expected

Germany’s 11 shots on target to Costa Rica’s six tells you all you need to know about this thriller. It was end to end in that second half, with the news that Japan were beating Spain seeming to send this match into a frenzy.

    Full-time

Germany did their best but in the end, they had to rely on a favour from Spain, which was not forthcoming. Goals from Havertz, Fullkrug and Gnabry meant they won this game but the damage was done in that opening defeat to the Japanese.

Los Ticos put on a good account of themselves at this World Cup and can be proud of what they’ve done.

    Goal stands!

After VAR checks it, the goal from Fullkrug is allowed to stand. He was obviously deemed inactive during the first part of the play when he appeared to be offside.

    Goal disallowed

Fullkrug thinks he’s made it four but is miles offside in the build-up of this move. VAR are taking a look though.

    All eyes on Spain

The Germans need a goal now from La Roja if they are to stay in the World Cup, and to hold Costa Rica out for the last 10 minutes or so, of course.

    GOAL!

Kai Havertz puts his team back in front. He pokes the ball away after a cross from Serge Gnabry.

What an impact he’s had since coming on in the 66th minute.

    Matarrita in so much space

He gets in behind the German backline, but his ball into the box isn’t quite up to it, and gets cut out. The game is on a knife edge.

Spain going through on goal difference

As it stands, a draw is not good enough for either of these teams to progress. However, one goal either way could change the complexion of this group.

Niclas Fullkrug should really score, but his shot from close range goes straight into the face of Keylor Navas and over the bar for the corner.
