WATCH: Israel crosses another ‘red line’ for Hezbollah

The killing of senior commanders and civilians is a major breach of security for the Lebanese group.

A nation already on edge for years, Lebanon’s foreign minister told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council that nobody is safe. With Israel diverting focus and forces to the north, is it preparing a ground invasion for what it calls a “second phase of the war” on Gaza?

How much of a blow is all this for Hezbollah? And is the region already at war?

US renews travel warning for Lebanon as fighting escalates

The State Department said it renewed its travel advisory for Lebanon, continuing to urge US citizens not to travel there and for those already in the country to leave immediately.

“Due to the unpredictable nature of ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel and recent explosions throughout Lebanon, including Beirut, the US Embassy urges US citizens to depart Lebanon while commercial options still remain available,” it said in a statement.

With at least 70 people killed in Lebanon this week, the death toll in the country since October has surpassed 740 during the worst Israel-Hezbollah flare-up since the 2006 war.

‘A missile attack is only one option’ for Hezbollah

While some analysts suggest Hezbollah will retaliate for Israel’s spate of attacks with a massive missile barrage from its vast arsenal, one observer says the response could be something different.

Beirut-based security analyst Ali Rizk noted that Hezbollah’s leader recently said in a speech that retaliation would come “in an expected and unexpected” manner.

“A missile attack is only one option. A cyberattack is possible. Hezbollah most likely has its own spies within Israel who could also carry out some very painful security operations. It might resort to something more surprising,” Rizk told Al Jazeera.

Hezbollah’s rocket barrage fired at Israel today is in response to the new “war goal” – outlined by Prime Minister Netanyahu this week – of returning tens of thousands of civilians safely to the country’s north, he added.

“The missile launches were saying to Netanyahu that goal won’t be able to be achieved, and the painful blows it suffered this week won’t affect its military capabilities.”

Thousands march in Liverpool for total halt of arms sales to Israel

More than 15,000 people marched in Liverpool to call on the UK government to stop all arms shipments to Israel.

“I keep coming because I see a genocide livestreamed to my phone every day with women and children killed, and seeing our government do nothing in response,” protester Sue Houseman told Al Jazeera at the rally.

“I find frustration that we can’t stand up and be humane and look after people who are just being punished and killed and slaughtered, having their water cut off and their food cut off. And our government just doesn’t act. I feel like I’ve got to hold them to account.”

Thousands march in Rome to protest ‘genocide’ in Palestine

Thousands of demonstrators marched through central Rome, calling for an end to the war on Gaza.

The crowd protested Israel’s actions in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Lebanon.

The protest saw participants carrying Palestinian flags and banners reading, “Stop the genocide” while chanting slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “Murderer Netanyahu”.

Demonstrators also criticised Italy’s government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, accusing Rome of complicity in Israel’s actions.

“It’s been nearly a year of this genocide, and now it seems they want to destroy not just Gaza but the entire [occupied] West Bank, all of Palestine, and even Lebanon,” Michela, a participant at the demonstration, told the Anadolu news agency.

Another participant, Sara, emphasised the need to continue protesting, pledging to do so as long as necessary as she asserted that a “free Palestine is a right”.

Israeli strike on Gaza school a ‘war crime’ under US cover: Hamas

Hamas has denounced a deadly Israeli air attack on a school sheltering displaced civilians in Gaza City which killed 22 people, including 13 children. The attack also wounded 30 people in the Zeitoun neighbourhood.

“These unprecedented crimes in modern history constitute a flagrant violation of all human values and international laws, and are an insistence on continuing the brutal genocide in Gaza – with military and political cover provided by the US administration,” Hamas said in a statement.

The Israeli attacks “place the human conscience and the international system with all its institutions before a moral, humanitarian and legal test to confront the aggression of the Israeli occupation, stop its crimes, and hold its terrorist leaders accountable”.

Best way to return Israelis to the north: ‘Stop Gaza bombardment’

Mohamad Elmasry, a professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, says that after taking multiple hits this week, Hezbollah is now trying to “shore up security and intelligence” and figure out how Israel was able to carry out the series of deadly attacks.

How the group responds “is a very difficult balancing act. They’re walking a tightrope”, he told Al Jazeera.

“If they respond forcefully – which is what they’ve promised and many are expecting – they risk all-out war and Israel doing to Beirut what it did to Gaza. On the other hand, if they don’t respond forcefully enough, they risk their deterrence capacity and their reputation,” said Elmasry.

There is a much more effective way for Israel to get its citizens safely back home in the country’s north, rather than starting a full-blown war with Hezbollah.

“That is, to stop the bombardment of Gaza. They’ve already levelled Gaza, it will take at least 80 years to reconstruct Gaza, according to the UN. But Israel is intent on continuing to attack.”

During Sweden protest, Greta Thunberg slams Israeli war on Gaza

Climate activist Greta Thunberg condemned the war in Gaza as a “horrific genocide” during a demonstration in Stockholm attended by thousands in support of Palestinians.

Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and held signs with messages reading: “Children are being killed in Gaza,” “Stop the genocide,” and “Palestine forever.”

Speaking to reporters, Thunberg said silence during this time amounts to complicity. “Anyone who has the means to act must raise their voice and do everything possible to stop it,” she said.

‘Illusion of absolute victory: Israelis rally for captive release

Thousands of Israelis have again taken to the streets of Tel Aviv to press for a Gaza truce deal that could free dozens of captives.

Eli Elbag, father of captive Liri Elbag, addressed his daughter at the demonstration. “It’s been a year since I last kissed you, a year since I last laughed with you. We will continue to fight to bring everyone home.”

Saturday’s protest unfolded in the shadow of increasing cross-border attacks between Israel and Lebanese group Hezbollah.

Shahar Mor, nephew of slain captive Avraham Munder, said he feared the fight against Hezbollah would again distract leaders from the plight of the abductees. “Their goal is to focus on the illusion of ‘absolute victory’ that is always just around the corner.”

Hezbollah retaliation ‘going to happen sooner than expected’

Elijah Magnier, a military analyst with sources close to Hezbollah, says Hezbollah possesses a significant arsenal to battle Israel with, including tens of thousands of medium and long-range missiles, “underground cities”, and an array of strategically placed rocket launchers.

He noted there are 7,000 to 10,000 of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan special forces distributed in small units of all the villages of southern Lebanon.

“The Israelis can see there’s a movement of Hezbollah’s troops waiting and preparing for the retaliation after the burial of all the commanders tomorrow afternoon. The response is going to happen sooner than expected,” Magnier told Al Jazeera.

“From what I understand from people on the ground, [the main target] will be Tel Aviv to make sure there’s a balance of deterrence there.”

Heavy fighting continues in Gaza’s southern Rafah city

    By Tareq Abu Azzoum

Reporting from Deir el-Balah, central Gaza

The situation is getting much more intense, especially in the southern part of Gaza where confrontations between Hamas fighters and Israeli forces in Rafah city are still raging. The combat is particularly heavy in the eastern and central areas of Rafah.

This is despite the Israeli army’s claim that it managed to “dismantle” Hamas’s Rafah Brigades in the city last week.

Also, one of the main medical warehouses has been hit in Rafah without any sort of warning, causing a great deal of destruction. There was no word on casualties.
