Negotiations under way for Hamas fighters trapped in Gaza tunnels: Report

Negotiations are ongoing to ensure safe passage for dozens of Hamas fighters holed up in tunnels in southern Gaza.

“Discussions and communications with the mediators [Egypt, Turkiye and Qatar] and the Americans are ongoing in an effort to resolve the crisis,” a Hamas leader told the AFP news agency on condition of anonymity.

On Wednesday, Hamas called on mediating countries to pressure Israel to allow safe passage for its fighters – the first time the Palestinian group publicly acknowledged the situation.

A source from one of the mediating countries confirmed on Thursday the United States, Qatar, Egypt and Turkiye have met “with the aim of reaching a compromise that would allow Hamas fighters to leave the tunnels behind the ‘yellow line’ near Rafah”.

An estimated 100 to 200 Hamas fighters have remained trapped in a network of tunnels under the city in an area under Israeli military control.

Father of freed Palestinian-American teen says son suffered in Israeli prison

Zaher Ibrahim, the father of released Palestinian-American teenager Mohammed Ibrahim, says his son lost a significant amount of weight and endured harsh conditions while in Israeli detention.

Mohammed, 16, was taken from his family home and held for more than nine months, a case advocates say reflects Israel’s widespread abuses against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

“After he got out, we took him straight to the hospital. He spent almost two hours there doing blood tests and a full medical exam. We’re still waiting for the results,” Zaher Ibrahim told Al Jazeera.

“They can arrest you and accuse you of anything – with proof or without proof – and the only thing you can do here is try to fight it,” he said, shortly after reuniting with his son.

“It’s very hard to fight. The chance of winning a case against an Israeli military court is basically zero percent.”

Zaher said he had no direct access to Mohammed while he was detained, receiving updates only through the US embassy or from former detainees held in the same facility.

“We’re trying to get his health back to where it was,” he said.

Palestine praises European stance against Israeli attack on West Bank

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry has welcomed a joint statement issued by the foreign ministers of France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany on the deadly developments in the occupied West Bank.

In a statement, the ministry said it “highly values” the European ministers’ clear condemnation of Israel’s illegal settlement expansion across the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, as well as their denunciation of escalating settler attacks on Palestinians and Israel’s withholding of Palestinian tax revenue.

The ministry said the European call to cancel the “E1” settlement plan, which would sever the West Bank and facilitate further land seizure, along with demands to release withheld tax funds, are positive steps that will strengthen the Palestinian Authority’s ability to govern.

Israeli killings in Jenin reflect ‘accelerated process of dehumanisation’

Yuli Novak, executive director of Israeli rights group B’Tselem, says the point-blank shootings of two Palestinians by Israeli soldiers in Jenin reflect an “accelerated process of dehumanisation” and the “complete abandonment” of Palestinian lives by Israeli authorities.

Novak said Israel has “no mechanism” capable of stopping such killings or prosecuting those responsible, calling on the international community to end Israel’s impunity and hold perpetrators to account.

Israeli forces and settlers have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since October 2023, according to B’Tselem.

“Similar previous operations have already forcibly displaced thousands of Palestinians from the refugee camps of Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams,” the group posted on social media.

Amnesty described the major assault as part of “Israel’s cruel system of apartheid against Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory”.

Israeli forces blocked medics after killing Palestinian men: Official

Jenin Governor Kamal Abu al-Rub says the Israeli army “did not allow anyone to approach the scene, and prevented ambulances from evacuating the two young men” after they were shot dead while surrendering to Israeli troops.

“The two young men raised their hands to the army, but soldiers opened fire on them,” Abu al-Rub said.

The Israeli army said it has begun an investigation into the circumstances of the killings caught on video.

On Wednesday, the army started a large-scale Israeli assault in the northern occupied West Bank, specifically in the Jenin and Tubas governorates.

Alongside Israel’s two-year genocidal war on Gaza, where nearly 70,000 people have been killed, assaults by the Israeli army and settlers in the West Bank have killed at least 1,083 Palestinians and wounded about 11,000.

More than 20,500 Palestinians have been detained, according to official Palestinian figures.

Israeli Knesset members react to Jenin ‘execution’ video

Footage showing Israeli forces shooting two Palestinian men at close range has generated widespread shock and outrage online.

Sarit Michaeli, the international director of B’Tselem, a leading Israeli human rights organisation, described the killings as “cold-blooded execution”.

Ahmed Tibi, a Palestinian-Israeli lawmaker and doctor, wrote on X, “This is what occupation looks like. And this is what a war crime looks like.”

Ofer Cassif, a progressive lawmaker from the left-wing Jewish-Arab party Hadash, said: “This is not a ‘war’, it is cold-blooded murder for which the murderers must pay a heavy price.”

“The war of extermination in Gaza is being ‘imported’ to the West Bank, and the world continues its silence,” Cassif added.

US congressman critical of Israel says AIPAC ‘spending’ in his district

Ro Khanna, a Democratic lawmaker from California and a vocal critic of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, says AIPAC, the prominent pro-Israel lobbying group, is “spending in my district”.

Khanna said the group is “asking people to disbelieve what they saw with their own eyes”, referring to the devastation in Gaza.

“Politicians who cave to special interests on Gaza won’t stand up against DC corruption or for working Americans. This is a moral test for anyone who wants to lead our party,” he said.

AIPAC is immensely influential in US politics. Its support or opposition can often make or break a candidate’s campaign. It also plays a key role in shaping US foreign policy in the Middle East.

US teen Mohammed Ibrahim released from Israeli prison after 9 months

    By Al Jazeera Staff

Israeli authorities have freed Palestinian-American teenager Mohammed Ibrahim after more than nine months of detention in a case that advocates say embodies Israel’s abuses against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Mohammed’s release came after a months-long pressure campaign by US lawmakers and civil rights groups. The teenager from Florida was 15 years old in February when he was arrested and taken from his family home in the town of al-Mazraa ash-Sharqiya near Ramallah.

He turned 16 while in jail, where he underwent a dramatic weight loss and contracted a skin infection.

Israel orders demolition of 23 buildings in Jenin refugee camp

Israeli forces have issued demolition orders for 23 buildings in the Jenin refugee camp, the latest wave of destruction targeting Palestinian communities in the northern West Bank.

The orders, set to start on Friday, call for the complete demolition of 12 buildings and the partial demolition of 11 others, according to UNRWA. The Jenin camp has faced repeated demolition campaigns this year.

The demolitions come as Israeli forces ramp up their “Iron Wall” army incursion into the northern West Bank after it was launched in January. The assault involves large-scale raids, killings and infrastructure destruction across Jenin and surrounding areas.

More than ten months into operation ‘Iron Wall’, destruction has been relentless. ‘This is a political operation, not a security one’: Governor

The Israeli ground and air assault began overnight on Wednesday in predominantly agricultural Tubas, the northeastern-most of the 11 governorates in the occupied West Bank.

“This is the first time that the entire governorate is included. The whole governorate is now under Israeli army operations,” said Ahmed al-Asaad, governor of the Tubas region.

Israeli forces raided the towns of Tammun and Tayasir as well as the Far’a refugee camp, al-Asaad said.

“The army has closed the city entrances with earth mounds so there is no movement at all. This is a political operation, not a security one,” he said.

Israeli army sends additional soldiers to besieged Tubas

Israel’s military has deployed reinforcements to the northern West Bank city of Tubas as its large-scale incursion and siege is in its second day.

Soldiers were seen moving in from the Tayasir checkpoint east of Tubas and from the Atouf Gate, expanding their presence across several areas of the governorate, the official Wafa news agency reported.

Israeli forces continue to enforce a strict curfew, block all main and secondary roads with earth mounds, raid homes and detain residents. Dozens of Palestinians remain held in field interrogation centres, Wafa added.

UNRWA chief highlights expanded humanitarian response across Gaza

Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini of the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees says it’s expanding humanitarian operations in Gaza as needs continue to soar.

Lazzarini said UNRWA’s health teams now treat nearly 15,000 patients every day and are widening public health services. The agency is also working to secure access to clean water while teams collect and dispose of waste that has become a major public health threat.

UNRWA’s psychosocial counsellors are running daily sessions to help families cope with trauma and loss, he said. Nearly 50,000 children are now attending in-person classes with many others online.

With 12,000 staff on the ground and decades of operational experience, Lazzarini said UNRWA has the capacity and community trust to deliver essential health, education, and social services directly and cost-efficiently.

He called for all Israeli restrictions on humanitarian access to be lifted to meet urgent needs and stabilise desperate conditions in the war-battered Palestinian enclave.

Hamas condemns killing of two unarmed Palestinians in Jenin

As we’ve been reporting, Israeli soldiers shot and killed two men in Jenin as they surrendered during an incursion into the city.

Hamas denounced the killings saying it reflects the “criminal mindset” driving Israel’s actions in the occupied West Bank.

The group said the shootings of unarmed men – along with the wider Israeli military campaign across occupied West Bank governorates – demonstrate armed resistance remains the “natural and legitimate response” to ongoing Israeli violations.

How does Israel handle allegations against its soldiers?

The Israeli army says the killing of two men in Jenin is “under review”. But Israel has a poor record of investigating its soldiers for misconduct or violations of the laws of war, fostering a culture of impunity and tolerance for such behaviour.

Several NGOs have looked at probes carried out by the military.

Action on Armed Violence conducted a major investigation in August 2025 that found 88 percent of Israeli military investigations into Gaza abuse allegations since October 2023 were either stalled or closed without results, with only one case leading to a prison sentence.

Yesh Din, an Israeli human rights organisation, found of 1,260 complaints between 2017 and 2021 only 0.87 percent against soldiers led to prosecutions. It said the military law enforcement system demonstrated a “complete disregard for Palestinians’ lives”.

Amnesty International’s reviews of Israel’s military justice system reached the same conclusion. Of 52 criminal investigations opened into deaths in detention and allegations of torture, only one resulted in an indictment.

Israeli forces launch series of attacks on southern Lebanon

The Israeli army says its forces carried out air strikes on an alleged weapons storage facility, military sites, and other infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported Israeli warplanes launched a new round of air raids this afternoon targeting the areas of Jarmuq and al-Mahmoudiya in the Jezzine district. Multiple strikes hit both locations in quick succession.

Separately, NNA said Israeli forces fired assault weapons towards farmers on the outskirts of the Wazzani area near Marjayoun. No casualties were reported.

Israel’s army has repeatedly carried out attacks on southern Lebanon on a near-daily basis despite a ceasefire in place with Hezbollah since November 2024.

Israel’s widespread bombing campaign killed more than 3,000 people and displaced nearly one million civilians during two years of war with Hezbollah.
