Egypt reaffirms commitment to Gaza peace plan on summit anniversary

Egypt has reaffirmed its commitment to consolidating peace in the Middle East and advancing a two-state solution, marking the first anniversary of the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit for Gaza, the Foreign Ministry says in a statement.

Cairo renewed its “full support for US President Donald Trump’s comprehensive peace plan for the Gaza Strip”, committing to close coordination with Washington and international partners to ensure “the full implementation of the plan’s various mandates, consolidate the ceasefire, guarantee sustainable access for humanitarian aid, complete the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, move forward with phase-two arrangements, and initiate early recovery and reconstruction efforts”.

Regional actors must seize the “historic opportunity” to launch a credible political process aimed at “establishing the independent Palestinian state on the June 4,1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital”, it added.

Pakistani PM reiterates commitment to Saudi Arabia’s security

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has once again reiterated the country’s “unwavering commitment to protecting Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security”.

Under the Mecca Defence Alliance – signed between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkiye – Islamabad stands shoulder to shoulder with Riyadh in support of the kingdom’s sovereignty, defence, and regional security, and fully supports its legitimate right to self-defence, Sharif said during a meeting with Nauman Mahmood, the secretary-general of the alliance.

Earlier this month, Turkiye, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia agreed to activate “deterrence measures” under the defence pact and rapidly deploy forces to the kingdom to counter attacks by Yemen’s Houthis.

Mahmood, a retired Pakistani army general, briefed Sharif on the strategy for the promotion of defence and strategic cooperation under the pact’s framework, according to a post on X by the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Office.

Muslim World League condemns continuing Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia

The Muslim World League has condemned the continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, which deliberately target civilians and civilian sites.

In a statement, the league’s secretary-general, Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, said the “treacherous” terrorist attacks violate all religious values, and international and humanitarian laws.

He added that the attacks “confirm the criminal approach of this terrorist militia in deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure”.

What is the Bab al-Mandeb strait and why does it matter?

    • Forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognised government hold parts of coastal land along the Bab al-Mandeb strait following their major counteroffensive this month. But the territory remains heavily contested after recent Houthi advances, while the armed group exerts control over the waterway by targeting shipping with missiles and drones from areas further up the Red Sea coast.
    • The strait, about 29km (18 miles) wide at its narrowest point, separates Yemen from Djibouti and Eritrea, linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, and acts as the vital southern gateway to the Suez Canal.
    • About 12 percent of global trade passes through the waterway, including 11 percent of seaborne oil and 8 percent of liquefied natural gas.
    • Its strategic importance has grown since the US-Israel war on Iran choked traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
    • Saudi Arabia diverted crude by pipeline to its Red Sea port of Yanbu, and southbound exports from there through Bab al-Mandeb jumped to 3.5 million barrels per day in June, from 240,000 a year earlier, according to Kpler data.
    •  Nearly one-fifth of global internet traffic and more than 90 percent of data capacity between Europe and Asia passes through the Red Sea, according to estimates by the research firm TeleGeography.

Iraq oil exports increase despite Strait of Hormuz disruption

Iraq’s crude oil exports have reached approximately 2.7 million barrels per day (bpd) despite disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis, the Oil Ministry has reported.

Spokesman Salim al-Rikabi told the Iraqi News Agency that the ministry was working under direct oversight from the oil minister to maintain and increase export volumes amid the global energy crisis.

He added that crude exports had risen significantly, from about 200,000bpd in May to current levels, pointing out that plans were under way to boost shipments through northern and southern outlets and maximise capacity on the Iraqi-Turkish export pipeline.

Iran executes ‘monarchist’ over armed attacks during war

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB has reported the execution of an armed operative in the southern city of Kerman who was convicted of carrying out shooting attacks that injured several civilians, including a young girl.

IRIB said Ali-Sina Mostafavi was executed following a series of armed attacks in the city during the US-Israel war on Iran, including a March 24, 2026 shooting in Azadi Square and an April 21 attack on conscripts and passing vehicles.

It added that Mostafavi was linked to monarchist groups, had sent video footage of military impact sites to foreign networks during the war, and expressed willingness in messages to attack Kerman airport.

Cairo hosts fresh talks on Palestinian unity, elections

The leaders of Palestinian groups, including the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Hamas, are due to meet in Cairo for talks on internal divisions, Palestinian unity and elections, sources have told Al Jazeera.

Fatah spokesman Abdel Fattah Dawla told the Turkish news agency Anadolu that the Wednesday and Thursday meetings would focus on preparations for broader dialogue and efforts to build consensus among the various Palestinian factions.

Last week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas postponed next month’s presidential and legislative elections by almost one year to September 11, 2027.

The PLO’s Executive Committee, which Abbas heads, said in a statement that conditions in occupied East Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip were not conducive to holding elections, pointing out that Israel had not allowed election materials or international observers to enter Gaza.

Cholera cases spike in Yemen as fighting escalates, WHO says

Suspected cholera cases in Yemen have tripled in the past three weeks, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns, as civilians continue to escape renewed fighting and seek safety in unsanitary camps.

Ramped-up combat, which has pushed more than 200,000 people to flee their homes, drove suspected cases from 217 in the week of September 6-12 to 647 in the week of September 27 to October 3, the WHO said in a report on Tuesday.

Yemen had reported 8,034 suspected cases and 27 deaths this year, the WHO said, with a quarter of the suspected cases occurring in the last four weeks.

The escalation in Yemen is a turning point

Yemen is witnessing a major military escalation that has once again brought the western coast and the area around the Bab al-Mandeb strait to the forefront of regional developments. Operation Yemen’s Dawn, launched by the forces loyal to the internationally recognised Yemeni government, has produced some results.

Government forces have advanced towards the strait of Bab al-Mandeb and are now fighting against reinforced Houthi positions. Clashes continue in parts of Dhubab District and around Dhubab Airport.

The central question now is whether these military moves can bring about a lasting change in the balance of power and whether they will widen the confrontation or open the way for a new negotiating process.

Israel’s advance towards ‘Yellow Line’ in Gaza forces displaced Palestinians into smaller spaces

Mahmoud Harzeen is pitching a tent about 200 metres (656 feet) from the yellow concrete blocks marking the “Yellow Line“, preparing for his sixth move.

Each time the line inches further into Gaza, the 35-year-old packs up and moves further back, trying to keep his family away from danger. But every move offers only temporary relief.

“Every time they move forward a little, we move back a little,” Harzeen told Al Jazeera.

The “Yellow Line” divided Gaza’s territory between Israeli and Palestinian control as part of the October 2025 “ceasefire” agreement.

Israeli forces withdrew behind the line, but have continued to move the demarcation deeper into Gaza. They now control about 65 percent of the territory, according to the UN, up from the 53 percent agreed upon a year ago.
