A new status quo in the Strait of Hormuz?
We’ve spoken to Trita Parsi, a foreign policy expert on Iran, about whether Trump’s recent statements focusing mostly on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme could make the prospect of heading towards negotiations easier.
Here’s what he said:
“If it is on the nuclear issue, there is some reason for limited optimism, because it appears the Iranian position has not hardened that much since they offered their proposal back in Geneva, which was a very strong proposal that Trump should have accepted, a much stronger deal than what Obama managed to get.
“On the strait, it appears that it may end up being a scenario in which, essentially, there is no real deal. The Iranians will continue to retain a degree of control over it. They will take transit fees – perhaps in coordination with Oman, perhaps other GCC states – but it’s not going to be a return back to the normal that existed prior to the war, because the US lacks the military ability to do so, and if the US cannot do it, then no other country can either.
“And that may then be quite desirable from the Iranian side, but it may also end up becoming acceptable to Trump, mindful of the fact that the US is not using the strait in the same manner that Asian countries are. But it would definitely be marking a significant change in the geopolitics of the region if this current situation ends up becoming the new status quo.”

War on Iran to hit global economy even in the case of a swift end, warns IMF head
The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the war will lead to higher inflation and slower global growth, even if it stops immediately.
The global lender is set to reduce its forecast for global economic growth and bump up its outlook for inflation, Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva told Reuters.
Without the war, Georgieva said the IMF had expected a small upgrade in its projection for global growth.
“Instead, all roads now lead to higher prices and slower growth,” she told the news agency. “Even if the war is to stop today, there would be a lingering negative impact to the rest of the world.”
The war’s economic implications are set to dominate next week’s IMF Spring Meetings.

Given Gaza, Lebanon ‘ceasefire’ track record, Iran’s rejection of US proposal ‘shouldn’t surprise anyone’
We’ve spoken to Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, about Trump’s looming deadline and whether Iran has time to reach a comprehensive deal or if it indeed has the incentive to do that.
Here’s what he said:
“First of all, the Iranians have given a response to the US, and their own proposal, which Trump has publicly reacted to in a limited way. It’s unclear whether he will accept it or if it will be a basis for a negotiation.
“But when it comes to the US’s proposal, it’s been rejected, and I don’t think that should surprise anyone.
“Given the US and Israel’s track record in Gaza and in Lebanon, in which ‘ceasefires’ were immediately violated and turned into one-sided ceasefires – while the US or Israel used that time only to be able to regroup and relaunch war – it is quite understandable that the Iranians are rejecting anything that smells like a ceasefire in which Iran gives up all of its leverage in phase one and then, when time comes, for the US to reciprocate in phase two – phase two was never reached.
“That’s what we’ve seen in Gaza; that’s what we’ve seen in Lebanon, and as a result, I don’t think the Iranians are in any way, shape or form incentivised to accept the American proposal. Whether the US accepts the Iranian proposal is, of course, a different matter.”

Iran seeks US acceptance of key demands before negotiations
In the past, Iran’s proposal had five points, but now, there are 10 points in response to the US proposal, made up of 15 points.
They are talking about the lifting of sanctions. They are talking about a kind of compromise about the enrichment of uranium. They said they had talked about that even before the beginning of this war, so it’s not done under pressure of the war.
But also among those points is a protocol for the safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. And linked to that is an Iranian demand that Iran can extract fees to help it rebuild and to help it compensate for losses in this war, for the destruction that happened across the country.
They want a permanent end to this war, not a ceasefire, and they want it on all fronts across the region. That implies Hezbollah, the Houthis and other allies in the region.
There is no compromise regarding these points. So far, they’re not willing to engage in serious negotiations if there is no preliminary acceptance, at least in principle, that some of these demands, or most of them, are going to be met.

The cost of Iranian attacks on Israel so far
We know that, according to some reporting, the war with Iran has cost the Israeli government around $15bn in the past month.
Around 26,000 Israelis, or a little more, have filed for compensation for significant damage. Damage that is regarded as minor has a different, streamlined process that doesn’t even get counted.
We also know that several buildings have been condemned for demolition because of the damage from Iranian missiles. At least one factory that manufactured drones has been decommissioned by a strike on a site in Petah Tikva.
All of that just gives you indications, because there is a lot of control in Israel about what gets seen and what gets known about this war.
