    Here’s what happened today

This live page will close soon. But before we go, here’s a recap of today’s biggest developments:

    • The US Treasury Department has again sanctioned UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, reversing her temporary removal from the sanctions list, which came after a federal judge ruling that the measures violated her free speech rights.
    • Trump announced that the Strait of Hormuz will remain accessible to all nations and free from single-country control in any potential agreement with Iran. He also said that no discussions were being held regarding easing sanctions on Tehran.
    • The White House dismissed a newly-drafted peace proposal as a “total fabrication” following claims by Iranian media that the agreement would allow Tehran to fully restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the withdrawal of US military forces from the region.
    • The Israeli military has designated all areas south of Lebanon’s Zahrani River as combat zones, threatening residents to flee their homes immediately as it prepares to deploy “extreme force” against Hezbollah targets.
    • Approximately 1.6 million people are displaced across Lebanon as the casualty count rises following the resumption of hostilities on March 2, with Lebanon’s Health Ministry reporting on Tuesday that Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,213 people and wounded 9,737 others.
    • An Israeli air strike on a house in central Gaza City on Tuesday killed 10 people, including four children, and injured many others.

Hungarian parliament votes to stay in ICC

Hungary’s parliament has approved legislation to continue the country’s membership in the International Criminal Court, reversing a 2025 decision made by the government of Viktor Orban.

Then-Prime Minister Orban announced the withdrawal in April 2025, shortly after Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Hungary for a state visit in a rare trip abroad in defiance of an ICC arrest warrant. The Orban government had described the warrant as “brazen.”

Hungary’s new Prime Minister Peter Magyar had pledged to keep Hungary in the ICC in his successful election campaign against Orban.

The legislation passed on Wednesday said “in the interest of international peace and security, and for the protection of human rights it is … necessary to hold those who committed the worst of international crimes, accountable in an international court.”

The Hague-based International Criminal Court was created in 2002 to prosecute individuals accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

US carries out new strikes on Iranian military site: Report

The US has carried out new strikes on an Iranian military site that allegedly posed a threat to US forces and commercial traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reports, citing an unnamed US official.

Earlier, Iran’s Fars news agency said three explosions were heard east of the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas at about 1:30am local time (22:00 GMT).

The Fars report stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the exact location and source of the sounds.

The air defence systems of Bandar Abbas were activated for a short time, according to Fars.

Hezbollah says it carried out 37 attacks on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon

Hezbollah says it launched 37 military operations on Wednesday against Israeli forces inside southern Lebanon.

The group stated that its fighters targeted Israeli troops, vehicles, and engineering equipment across multiple locations, focusing heavily on the towns of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Odaisseh, as well as positions near Naqoura, Debel and Rab el-Thalathine.

The operations, according to the statement, include close-range clashes in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, the targeting of multiple Merkava tanks and an Iron Dome platform, and drone attacks on Israeli positions in Galilee.

Oil prices continue to slide as investors monitor US-Iran negotiations

Oil prices have fallen more than 5 percent as investors await updates on a framework of a US-Iran deal to end their conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude futures have dropped to $94.29 a barrel, while US oil futures have fallen to $88.68 a barrel.

Both benchmarks touched their lowest in a month earlier on Wednesday and settled at their lowest since April 17. The losses more than erased Brent’s gains from Tuesday.

Traders are looking for signs that a deal can be agreed between Washington and Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies.

Child, three women among seven people killed by Israel in Gaza City amid Eid celebrations

It was meant to be the first night of Eid celebrations and family visits in the Gaza Strip. Instead, it turned into a tragedy as Israeli fighter jets carried out intense air strikes targeting a residential building in central Gaza City.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society field hospital confirmed that seven Palestinians were killed, including three women and a child, and 18 others were injured following the attack.

The attack triggered a massive fire that engulfed huge parts of the residential building. There were people trapped inside the building, and emergency crews struggled to put out the fire and rescue Palestinians.

Israel claimed that the attack targeted senior Hamas figures, yet there is no official confirmation that has been issued by Hamas regarding these claims.

Iran will stick to its red lines, ‘will not be pushed by Trump’s rhetoric’: Official

Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s national security committee, has said that Iran will “not be pushed back by Trump’s rhetoric”.

Azizi said that Tehran would stick to “its red lines”, including “the right to enrich uranium, possession of enriched uranium, authority over the Strait of Hormuz, and the removal of sanctions”.

“It is obvious Trump, seeking a way out of this strategic deadlock, alternates between issuing threats and appealing for an agreement,” Azizi added.

Trump finds himself in difficult position as war on Iran becomes economic fight

Doug Bandow, senior fellow at the Cato Institute, says the main fight between the US and Iran is now on the economic front with the duel blockades currently in place in the Strait of Hormuz.

“Trump is in a very difficult position. He has inadvertently given Iran a very powerful weapon by closing the Strait of Hormuz, and he’s not willing to risk US ships to try to open it,” Bandow told Al Jazeera.

“It’s going to be hard for him not to make a deal that’s to the satisfaction of Iran,” he added.

Bandow also casts doubts about Trump’s claims that he doesn’t care about the war’s impact on the upcoming midterm elections.

“He might be saying that, but no one really believes him. The last thing he wants is to have a Republican debacle in November,” he said.

“Everyone wants this to end. I have no doubt that he [Trump] is hearing this and does care,” Bandow told Al Jazeera.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that “solidarity and cooperation among the region’s countries” is of “utmost importance” at this moment in history, in an Eid al-Adha message shared on social media.

Araghchi said that “Muslim leaders” and “advocates of peace” should “stand as one to pave the way towards peace and harmony”, adding that the “current moment of utmost sensitivity will remain etched in the memory of history”.

US re-adds UN expert Francesca Albanese to sanctions list

The US Treasury Department has added Francesca Albanese, a UN special rapporteur on the occupied West Bank and Gaza, back to its sanctions list, according to the department’s website.

It comes just days after she was removed from the list following a ruling by a federal judge that the sanctions restricted her freedom of speech.

In February, Albanese’s family sued the Trump administration over the sanctions, arguing that they had been used to punish Albanese for bringing attention to rights abuses Israel has perpetuated against Palestinians.

We will bring you more updates as details emerge.

Seoul summons Iranian ambassador over ‘highly likely’ missile attack on South Korean ship

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry summoned Iranian ambassador Saeed Koozechi to lodge a powerful protest regarding an attack on a South Korean vessel, demanding “responsible measures, including steps to prevent a recurrence”, according to the Yonhap news agency.

The diplomatic friction intensified after South Korea’s Foreign Ministry announced that an Iranian-made antiship missile was “highly likely” used in an attack earlier this month on the HMM Namu, a vessel operated by the South Korean shipping company HMM.

Speaking to reporters at the ministry headquarters in Seoul following the meeting, Koozechi rejected any Iranian connection to the incident.

“Iran denies all allegations regarding this matter,” he said. “We were absolutely not involved.”

“Personally, I would like to express my regret over the damage suffered by the Korean vessel,” he added, according to Yonhap.

Trump seeking ‘victory image’ by insisting on Abraham Accords expansion

That’s according to Danny Citrinowicz, a former Israeli military intelligence analyst.

“Trump is trying, as hard as he can, to manufacture a ‘victory image.’ If Iran will not give him one, then perhaps the Gulf states will, allowing him to justify what increasingly looks like a deeply troubled approach toward Tehran,” he wrote on X.

During his cabinet meeting earlier today, Trump said he would like to see Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to join the Abraham Accords to normalise ties with Israel. “I think those countries owe it to us,” he said.

Citrinowicz said there is “virtually no chance” that will happen, however. “But Washington’s persistence is steadily eroding trust with Riyadh at a moment when the Saudi leadership is already deeply concerned about renewed regional escalation,” he wrote.

“It is impractical, detached from reality, and so disconnected from the actual dynamics of the Middle East that it raises serious doubts about whether this administration truly understands the region at all.”

What’s happening in occupied West Bank?

As Israeli forces launch a barrage of strikes on southern Lebanon, soldiers and settlers are also carrying out attacks in the occupied West Bank.

Here’s a look at the latest developments, according to the Wafa news agency:

    • Israeli forces assaulted a man during a raid on the Zawata area, west of Nablus, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said.
    • Settlers beat a Palestinian man and sprayed him with pepper spray in Beita, south of Nablus.
    • Israeli forces stormed the village of Awarta, south of Nablus, firing tear gas, stun grenades and live ammunition. They carried out a similar raid in the al-Mughayyir area, near Ramallah.
    • Soldiers also descended upon the city of Nablus, conducting searches and stopping citizens.
    • Northeast of occupied Jerusalem in Hizma, soldiers raided several shops, searched vehicles and interrogated several men.

Hezbollah claims more attacks on Israeli soldiers, equipment

The Lebanese group says it has carried out a series of attacks on Israeli military positions, following earlier attacks in the Zawtar al-Sharqiyah area:

    • Fighters targeted an Iron Dome battery at the Jal al-Allam military site in northern Israel with a drone.
    • They also struck an Israeli vehicle at a camp near the Lebanese border.
    • In the municipality of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, Hezbollah bombed Israeli soldiers, and targeted two other groups of soldiers elsewhere in southern Lebanon with missiles.
    • Fighters also launched missiles at a newly established Israeli military position in southern Lebanon’s Tell al-Awida.

Death toll rises to seven in Israeli attack on Gaza City

We have reported earlier based on the Palestine Red Crescent Society that an Israeli air strike on a home in central Gaza City killed at least four people and injured 15 others.

The death toll now rose to seven, with at least 15 others injured, medical sources at al-Shifa Hospital in the city cited by the Wafa news agency.

The report said an Israeli warplane fired two missiles at a house in the vicinity of al-Israa Tower on Omar Al-Mukhtar Street near the municipal park in the city centre.

Israel claims to strike 550 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon this week

The Israeli army says it has struck military structures, command centres and launch sites used by Hezbollah in Lebanon throughout the day.

Since the start of the week, Israeli forces have struck 550 Hezbollah targets, the military added.

As we’ve been reporting, Israel is carrying out a barrage of attacks across southern Lebanon after issuing forced displacement orders for Tyre and Nabatieh and declaring that everywhere south of the Zahrani River is a “combat zone”.

Under US blockade, Iranian gov’t sells subsidised meat for Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, one of the most important dates in the Islamic calendar, comes at a critical time for Iranians this year.

Meat from sacrificed animals is often eaten at Iranian tables, but a blockade on Iranian ports and sanctions by the US has led to escalating costs across the country.

A municipal body in Tehran announced yesterday that each kilogramme of sacrificial meat would be sold at 7.4 million rials ($4.30) at designated shops.

The price for a similar cut on the market can be more than three times that, depending on its quality and the location of the butchers. The minimum wage is currently less than $100 per month in Iran.

“I usually buy meat for a stew or a few dishes around every three weeks; for some families in the neighbourhood, it has become a sort of luxury,” said a middle-aged woman, who lives with her husband and son in Tehran.

She told Al Jazeera that chicken, eggs and legumes have become replacements for red meat, but the costs of these staples have significantly increased, too.

Oil prices drop, US Treasury yields decline as investors watch US-Iran negotiations

Markets are still reacting to ongoing hopes that the US and Iran could ink an agreement in the coming days, but investors are warning that the optimism will not last much longer.

Brent crude was down 3.2 percent at $93.48 a barrel late this afternoon, while US Treasury yields have maintained recent declines that investors say were predicated on a potential deal.

President Donald Trump earlier signalled a deal with Iran may still be on the table, even as the White House rejected news of a framework that was widely reported in Iranian state media.

“The hope will be that this is finally the week when a real breakthrough is achieved, but should negotiations fail, then we could see market patience wear thin,” AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould told the AFP news agency.
