Trump seeks Iran peace deal that ‘satisfies his red lines’

The US has warned it’s “more than capable” of resuming its war on Iran after President Trump said any peace deal must adhere to his “red lines”.

Unnamed US sources told the AFP news agency a peace deal is waiting on Trump’s sign-off, but he made no decision after a White House Situation Room meeting on Friday.

Trump said his priorities for any deal include Iran agreeing to never develop nuclear weapons and the reopening of the blockaded Strait of Hormuz.

“President Trump will only make a deal that is good for America and satisfies his red lines,” an unidentified White House official said. “Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon.”

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, while attending a defence summit in Singapore, said on Saturday Washington is “more than capable” of restarting the war if necessary, adding “our stockpiles are more than suited for that”.

US Central Command posted on X that American forces “remain present and vigilant across the region”.

‘Utter chaos’ in northern Israel as Hezbollah launches rocket attacks

Channel 13 reports Prime Minister Netanyahu scheduled an urgent security assessment with Defence Minister Israel Katz, military Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, and commanders in the north.

“The Israeli army was surprised by the scale of the rocket fire and Hezbollah’s decision to change its fire policy in response to the expansion of the Israeli army’s ground operations in southern Lebanon,” it said.

“Dozens of rockets were fired from Lebanon toward the north on Saturday, and for the first time since the ceasefire began [April 17] these rockets reached the cities of Safad and Nahariya” in northern Israel.

There is “utter chaos and an uncontrollable situation”, it said, adding, “the government is not concerned about this”.

In a related development, Israeli Army Radio reported warning sirens sounded 1,099 times in northern Israel since the start of the “fragile ceasefire”.

Hezbollah, meanwhile, said it launched drone attacks targeting Israeli soldiers near the settlement of Natua and at the Galilee Forest military camp in northern Israel.

In recent weeks, Hezbollah drones have raised growing concern in Israel, with Netanyahu describing the weapons as a “major threat” because of the difficulty in detecting them.

Hezbollah claims multiple attacks in south Lebanon and northern Israel

Hezbollah says it launched 24 attacks on Saturday targeting invading troops, military vehicles, and infrastructure as well as firing multiple rocket barrages at the Kiryat Shmona settlement in northern Israel.

In a statement, the group outlined its extensive use of rocket salvoes, artillery fire and attack drones to strike Israeli forces.

Key targets included five Merkava tanks, a military bulldozer, and military infrastructure in Safad, Nahariya and Karmiel, the Meron air surveillance base, and Israel army barracks at Liman, Shomera, and Ya’ara.

Strikes focused heavily on repelling advancing soldiers around the areas of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, Yohmor al-Shaqif, Debel and al-Ghandouriyah, where the Lebanese group claimed to have carried out multiple ambushes and multi-weapon attacks.

Hardline Israeli minister demands to level south Beirut ‘to the ground’

Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir posted a video calling on Israel’s prime minister to “level the southern suburbs in Beirut to the ground” as Hezbollah heavily bombards northern Israel.

Posting on his Instagram account, Ben-Gvir said he opposed the previous ceasefire with Lebanon, calling for targeting the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital, where Hezbollah has a significant presence.

He addressed Israel’s leader directly in the video, saying: “Dear Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, I love and appreciate you, but now is the time to level the suburbs to the ground. We have appreciation for Trump and we must say thank you for the partnership. But the red line is the harm to soldiers or civilians, and the suburbs must be levelled to the ground.”

How the end of the nuclear file could reshape Iran and the region

Iran’s decision to act on its long-promised threat to close the Strait of Hormuz has brought US countermeasures in the form of a US naval blockade.

Despite doubts over the legality, feasibility and efficacy of Iran’s initial move and flip-flops about the continuation of the closure, the immediate global impact – surging oil prices and cascading market shocks – appears to have surprised even Iran itself, judging by reactions from government loyalists on state and social media.

A radical idea once dismissed as rhetorical bluster or, at worst, a doomsday scenario, has emerged as a weapon of mass disruption, potentially more potent than the weapon of mass destruction Iran has long been suspected of pursuing.

WATCH: Qatar rejects Strait of Hormuz toll; says temporary charges ‘negotiable’

Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has told the Shangri-La Dialogue his country opposes a permanent toll for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

He added, however, Doha would find a temporary fee negotiable if it’s used to help reopen the crucial waterway.

About 20 percent of the world’s energy supplies traversed the strait prior to the US-Israel attack on Iran, which later effectively closed Hormuz in response.

Israel carrying out ‘scorched-earth policy’ in Lebanon: PM

Lebanon’s prime minister has accused Israel of pursuing a “scorched-earth policy” in his country’s south, urging a halt to incessant air and artillery strikes.

A day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his forces had advanced deeper into Lebanon, his counterpart Nawaf Salam warned the country is facing a “dangerous” escalation and called for “a swift and real ceasefire”.

In a televised address, Salam accused Israel of “collective punishment” by “destroying towns and villages, and forcing their inhabitants into exile”.

This will bring “neither security nor stability” to Israel, he said. Israel issued forced displacement warnings for more than a dozen locations in southern Israel on Saturday.

Netanyahu faces criticism over handling of Israel’s war with Hezbollah

Israel’s former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has criticised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Hezbollah repeatedly fired rocket and drone salvoes into northern Israel.

“The government is returning us to the contemptible policy of containment and normalising an intolerable and unacceptable situation,” Bennett was quoted by The Times of Israel as saying.

“Over the weekend, sirens were heard every 20 minutes across the north, and people were forced to seek shelter. This is not victory.”

Bennett called for military action against Hezbollah in Lebanon and strikes on the capital.

Dahiyeh must tremble until security returns to the north,” he said, referring to the Shia-majority suburb of Beirut known to be a Hezbollah stronghold.
