Turkish foreign minister meets Hamas delegation in Ankara
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met a Hamas delegation headed by Muhammad Darwish, the chairman of the group’s Shura Council, sources at the Turkish Foreign Ministry told Anadolu news agency.
The meeting addressed ongoing efforts to achieve a lasting peace in Gaza, current activities to deliver humanitarian aid to the Strip, and other regional developments, the sources added.
During the meeting, Fidan emphasised that the ongoing war in the region should not cause the Palestinian cause to be forgotten, noting that Turkiye continues to keep the disasters caused by Israel in Gaza and the West Bank on the international community’s agenda.
Fidan stressed that the increased Israeli presence in Gaza and the prevention of essential humanitarian aid from reaching the Strip are unacceptable. He added that all countries supporting Palestine, especially Islamic countries, must continue to defend the just cause of the Palestinian people, affirming that Turkiye will continue to lead efforts in this direction.
Fidan also indicated that Turkiye will continue to firmly oppose any steps aimed at forcing the Palestinian people to leave the Gaza Strip.

Israel built, defended secret base in Iraq for Iran war, WSJ reports
Israel set up a clandestine military outpost in the Iraqi desert to support its air campaign against Iran and launched air strikes against Iraqi troops who nearly discovered it, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing people familiar with the matter, including US officials.
Israel built the installation, which housed special forces and served as a logistical hub for its air force, with the knowledge of the US just before the start of the US-Israel war on Iran, the newspaper said. It also included search-and-rescue teams positioned to assist any downed Israeli pilots, the WSJ said.
Al Jazeera could not independently verify the report.
The base was almost discovered in early March after Iraqi state media said a local shepherd reported unusual military activity, including helicopter movements, in the area.
Iraqi troops were dispatched to investigate, but Israeli forces used air strikes to keep them at a distance and prevent the site from being discovered, the paper said, citing one of the sources.
The WSJ cited a complaint filed with the UN later in March in which Iraq said the attack involved foreign forces and air strikes, attributing it to the US.

Deal looks likely as Iran needs sanctions relief to rebuild
Despite Iran’s internal factionalism, the country’s leadership has made a strategic decision to pursue a deal with the US, according to Sina Azodi from George Washington University.
“There has always been competition between different factions. This is a notorious feature of the Iranian system that slows down decision-making,” Azodi told Al Jazeera. “But I think the leadership has ultimately decided to pursue a deal, because now that the Islamic Republic has survived, it needs sanctions relief, it needs money to rebuild the economy, it needs to address surging inflation and unemployment. Without sanctions relief, they cannot rebuild the economy.”
Azodi also said that the fate of the Strait of Hormuz depends on the broader war settlement.
“It seems that the Iranians and Americans are discussing a one-page memorandum that ends the war and opens the strait in return for a complete end to the conflict and the lifting of the naval blockade on Iran.”
After that, he said, the two sides will move to the question of Iran’s nuclear programme. “But I think, ultimately, if there is a political agreement, the Strait of Hormuz can potentially go back to what it was before the US and Israel struck Iran.”

Hezbollah claims 22 strikes on Israeli forces on Saturday
The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah says its fighters launched 22 strikes on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon and northern Israel on Saturday.
The group targeted gatherings of Israeli soldiers and vehicles in the towns of Biyyada, Rachaf, Deir Siryan and Chama, using rocket barrages, artillery shells and attack drones.
Similar strikes were directed at troop concentrations east of the Khiam municipality, near the town of Naqoura, and in the vicinity of Tayr Harfa.
The group also reported striking Israeli personnel stationed near the border sites of Misgav Am and Jall el-Aalam, and a helipad located in the Shlomi settlement.

Both Iran, US come to negotiating table thinking they ‘just won the war’
Both Iran and the United States are serious about reaching a deal, but the perception on each side that they have won the war is making it difficult to move forward, according to Sina Azodi, director of the Middle East studies programme at George Washington University.
“Both the Iranians and the Americans come to the negotiating table with the perception that they have just won the war, and therefore feel less need to make concessions,” Azodi told Al Jazeera.
Iran “have taken a lot of hits, but ultimately, their objective was to survive the conflict, which they achieved”, he said.
On the US side, Trump’s rhetoric about destroying Iran’s navy and degrading its missile capacity reflects a belief in Washington that the US won.
On what it would take to move negotiations forward, Azodi said: “I believe that if the issue of Iran’s enrichment capacity is resolved, if there can be a suspension of uranium enrichment for a period both sides agree on, then the likelihood of getting a deal is very high.”

‘The US is seen as the leader and everyone else as client states’
The United States needs to fundamentally rethink how it engages with Gulf states, treating them as partners rather than clients, according to Mark Kimmitt, former US assistant secretary of state for political-military affairs.
“We have had 75 years of practice. It is called NATO,” Kimmitt told Al Jazeera, when asked how Washington could navigate the competing goals of GCC capitals.
“Germany has different long-term goals than the United Kingdom. France has a different defence view than either of them. We deal with each as a collective but also as individuals,” he added.
The problem, he continued, is that the model applied in Europe has not been replicated in the Gulf. “In Europe, the US has generally been a partner. The lead partner, but a partner. In this region, the United States is seen as the leader and everyone else as client states.”
He added that there “will never be a GCC version of NATO, but the philosophy of how we engage with European capitals respecting their disparate views ought to be applied here as well.”

IRGC navy warns that any attack on Iranian tankers will be met with strike on US base
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy command has warned that any attack on Iranian oil tankers or commercial ships will be met with a large attack on its vessels as well as an American base in the region, Iran’s state-run IRIB News agency reported.
“Any attack on Iranian oil tankers and commercial ships will be met with a wide attack on one of the American bases in the region and enemy ships,” the IRGC Navy Command was quoted by IRIB News.
Tensions continue to remain high in the strait, with Iranian and US forces exchanging fire. Despite the limited skirmishes, Donald Trump says the ceasefire is still in effect.

Qatar and Saudi foreign ministers discuss Iran-US ceasefire and de-escalation
Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani held a phone call with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to discuss regional tensions and efforts to maintain stability.
In a post on X, the Qatari Foreign Ministry said the two sides discussed relations and “developments in the situation in the region, particularly those related to the ceasefire between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the efforts aimed at de-escalation that contribute to enhancing security and stability in the region.”
It added that Qatar stressed the need for all parties to engage with mediation efforts, warning that a sustainable solution depends on dialogue and addressing the “root causes of the crisis”.

‘The United States cannot afford this much longer’
The United States needs to fundamentally rebalance its relationship with the Gulf region because of financial reality, according to Mark Kimmitt, former US assistant secretary of state for political-military affairs.
“Candidly, the United States cannot afford this much longer,” Kimmitt told Al Jazeera. He pointed to what economist Niall Ferguson has called the Ferguson Rule, the point at which a country’s defence budget is exceeded by its national debt payments. “That is the end of the empire. We hit that two years ago. And when the Department of Defense is now proposing a $1.5 trillion defence budget, that will only widen that gap further.”
“I am not talking about America pulling back from the world. But I think we need to rebalance our relationship in this region for many reasons,” he added.
On the prospects for normalised relations between Iran and its Gulf neighbours, Kimmitt said, “Iran is a hegemonic predator. I think it will take a significant change in the regime inside Iran before there is a normalised relationship with its Gulf neighbours. The relationship right now is not one based on mutual respect, it is based on pressure and threats.”

Iran’s football federation has said the men’s national team will take part in the 2026 World Cup that begins in June
Iran’s football federation has said the men’s national team will take part in the 2026 World Cup that begins in June, but demanded that joint hosts the United States, Mexico and Canada agree to its conditions amid the Middle East war.
The call on Saturday comes after Canada refused entry to the federation’s chief last month before the FIFA Congress because of his alleged links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the ideological arm of Iran’s military, which it designated as a “terrorist group” in 2024.
Iran’s presence at the tournament, which will take place between June 11 and July 19, has been shrouded in uncertainty since the US and Israel launched a war on the Middle East country in February.
“We will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup, but the hosts must take our concerns into account,” the Iranian federation said on its official website.
“We will participate in the World Cup tournament, but without any retreat from our beliefs, culture, and convictions.”
