    Here’s what happened today

    • Trump said he cancelled “scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran” because “discussions” had been approved by Iran’s “highest level” of leaders.
    • He also said a deal could be signed as soon as this weekend, possibly in Europe.
    • Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said that when a draft text has been approved, it will be announced by Iran’s government.
    • India’s shipping minister, ‌Sarbananda Sonowal, said that three Indian seafarers were killed in a US attack on an oil tanker in the Gulf.
    • Israel’s army claimed to have seized “operational control” of the area north of Lebanon’s Wadi Saluki stream, 10km (6 miles) from the Israeli border.
    • Israeli forces launched multiple deadly attacks across Lebanon, including one that injured 10 hospital staff in the southern city of Tyre.
    • The World Bank warned that the war on Iran could drag global economic growth to its lowest levels since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Americans will not support troops on the ground in Iran

Any idea or notion of US troops on the ground will not go well with the American public and will certainly cause even those who may be in support to pause.

Trump, on the campaign trail, promised he would not start an endless war. He’s insisted this is not that.

But the Americans are sceptical because they’ve seen this movie before and it plays out with this sort of mission creep, with each coming week there is another justification for why this is not wrapped up.

That’s certainly how Iran is playing out.

Sound of explosions reported as Iran’s navy confronts vessel in Hormuz Strait

Iran’s state-controlled broadcaster IRIB reports that the explosions heard off the coast of Sirik in southern Iran are related to the confrontation by Iran’s navy of a “violating vessel that intended to pass through the Strait of Hormuz”.

Citing a military source, the broadcaster said, “The vessel involved was a tanker that was forced to comply with the transit ban after receiving warnings from the IRGC Navy.”

US-Iran deal will ‘test Trump’s relationship with Netanyahu’

While there seems to be a growing rift between Trump and Netanyahu, former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Joel Rubin says not too much should be read into it.

“The US is still coordinating with the Israeli military and intelligence apparatus,” he told Al Jazeera.

“While President Trump did tell the Israelis not to bomb Lebanon, Netanyahu ignored that essentially and there’s been this public back and forth.

“But I view Trump as treating Netanyahu essentially as he treats the Senate majority leader from his own party or the House speaker from his own party when he’s not happy with what they’re doing and he kind of tells them that, but he isn’t going to break the relationship.”

However, any agreement between the US and Iran will test Trump’s relationship with Netanyahu, Rubin said.

Potential US invasion of Kharg would create ‘big issue’ for Gulf security

Trump has said his threat to take Iran’s Kharg Island is “off the table” for now amid efforts to reach a deal.

But Dania Thafer, executive director of the Gulf International Forum, warns that such a takeover would have massive regional implications, likely exposing Gulf allies to more intense Iranian retaliation.

“I think if the Trump administration is bent on taking Kharg Island, it would be a very big issue for the region, for the security of the Gulf states,” Thafer told Al Jazeera. “Iran likes to threaten the Gulf states instead of dealing with Israel itself or actually hitting… at the US.”

Thafer said Iran is holding the Gulf states “hostage for other countries’ actions”, adding that Iran’s IRGC views “everyone as expendable”.

Iran’s IRNA broadcaster reports that an attack on an Iranian fishing boat off Sirik injured one person.

Citing Sirik’s governor, Reza Shahidian, IRNA said that “the fisherman was fishing in territorial waters when he was suddenly attacked by the enemy”.

“The vessel sank during the incident, but the fisherman was rescued by another boat present in the area.”

Israeli settler attacks in West Bank displaced thousands this year: UN

The United Nations says the number of settler attacks in the occupied West Bank this year has now crossed 1,000.

“Our colleagues at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs inform us that the number of settler attacks causing casualties or property damage this year in the West Bank has now surpassed 1,000,” a spokesperson for the UN chief told reporters.

“These attacks have affected more than 230 communities across all parts of the West Bank. More than 2,200 Palestinians have been displaced this year due to settler violence or other access restrictions, alongside hundreds more who have been displaced due to home demolitions by Israeli authorities.”

‘Netanyahu’s not going to stray too far from what Trump wants’

There have been differences between Trump’s and Netanyahu’s goals in the war on Iran since the start, Matthew Kroening, vice president for geostrategy at the Atlantic Council, told Al Jazeera.

“I think when the military operation started, the Israelis were out for regime collapse, while the US had more limited objectives of degrading Iran’s military capabilities and stopping the nuclear programme. So I think those differences were there, and now we see them coming out.

“And I think the president is ultimately right when he says he calls the shots. For an Israeli leader, maintaining a good relationship with Washington is one of your most important strategic priorities.

“So I do think that ultimately Netanyahu’s not going to stray too far from what Washington wants.”

White House faced political, economic pressure to make deal with Iran

If you spoke to anyone in and around the White House, they would say they were under no pressure, that this was going to be a good deal or no deal at all. That the US had the weapons, the men, the material to continue this war as long as they needed, to get Iran to agree to no nuclear weapons – not now, not ever.

But the reality is, there was pressure.

There was political pressure from [Trump’s] Republican counterparts, who were concerned about the impact it was having on Trump’s popularity, and they were worried that the tail of this war would continue all the way to the midterms in November.

Then there was the economic cost. Just a couple of days ago, we saw that inflation had risen here in the US to 4.2 percent. The cost of filling cars was more expensive, and that’s effectively a tax on almost every other part of living in the US. People were worried, concerned, angry, and they were voicing that very clearly.

US and Iran ‘must take off-ramp’ provided by mediators

Despite recent tit-for-tat military attacks, the US and Iran are both looking for a way to end the war, says Zahid Mehmood, a retired Pakistani army major-general.

He told Al Jazeera that Tehran is under “tremendous” economic pressure while Trump faces political pressure in the US, where the war is extremely unpopular.

“You can’t keep Hormuz blocked for much longer like this … so they must create incentives for each other and take this opportunity, this off-ramp, that Pakistan has provided them,” said Mehmood.

What did Trump and Iran say about the potential deal?

We have been reporting on Trump saying that an MoU with Iran has been “agreed by all parties” and that he has cancelled the planned strikes on Iran.

Here is what we know so far:

    • Trump says he believes Iran’s supreme leader has approved the deal.
    • The US president says the MoU has been backed by many countries that have “great influence” over Iran.
    • Iran has committed not to pursue a nuclear weapon under the terms of a deal being worked out, according to Trump.
    • Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says Qatar and Pakistan are actively engaging in mediation efforts, but that recent US actions have affected the diplomatic process.
    • He added that Iran had agreed to much of the draft text of a potential deal, but claimed the US had repeatedly shifted its position.
    • Once the relevant authorities reach a conclusion on the details of the draft text of an agreement, Iran’s government will make a formal announcement, the Iranian official said.

India tells agencies to be ‘ready to respond to contingency involving Indian seafarers’

India’s government has instructed its agencies to remain vigilant after a series of attacks on vessels carrying Indian seafarers in the Gulf.

“The Government has directed all concerned agencies to remain on heightened alert and maintain readiness to respond to any ‌contingency involving Indian seafarers or Indian maritime interests,” said a statement ‌by India’s shipping ministry.

The statement said the government is closely coordinating with the Foreign Ministry, Indian Navy, maritime administrations of friendly countries, shipping companies and other stakeholders to ensure timely support and assistance to Indian seafarers.

As we reported, several US-claimed attacks have hit vessels carrying Indian crew in the Gulf of Oman in recent days, including one on the Settebello tanker yesterday that killed three Indian sailors.

‘This is not the deal, is just the MOU to end the current conflict’

The US and Iran still have a long way to go despite a possible deal, former US Army General Mark Kimmitt told Al Jazeera.

“We’ve got to recognise this is not the deal. This is just the MoU needed to end the current conflict.

“So this will stop the conflict, it will open the Strait of Hormuz, it will be a downpayment on further negotiations. But we’re nowhere hear hitting the details or hard parts.”

Trump ‘closer to saying this is a done deal’ than before

Trump has come closer to saying that this is a done deal than he has at any point since the ceasefire began more than nine weeks ago.

He says that there will be a deal signed somewhere in Europe, which suggests that the planning is already significantly under way to get that deal done.

He is going to send his vice president, JD Vance. Steve Witkoff, one of his chief negotiators, will also be there.

Iran’s FM spokesman says Iran firm on ‘red lines’

We can now bring you remarks from Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on the status of US-Iran negotiations.

In comments carried by Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency, Baghaei said that Qatar and Pakistan are actively engaging in mediation efforts, but that recent US actions have affected the diplomatic process.

He added that Iran had agreed to much of the draft text of a potential deal, but claimed the US had repeatedly shifted its position.

Tehran, Baghaei said, remains firm on its “red lines”.
