Global spending on nuclear weapons jumps 19 percent
Global spending on nuclear weapons hit a record high last year, according to a report by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
The world’s nine nuclear-armed countries spent a total of $119bn, or $3,768 per second, on nuclear weapons, a 19-percent increase from 2024.
Those nine countries are the US, Russia, China, France, the UK, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel. The US spent more than all of the other nuclear armed states combined, coming in at $69.2bn.
“At a time when the cost of living is skyrocketing and food and fuel are unaffordable for so many, it is unthinkable that these nine countries are spending billions on a false promise of security,” Susi Snyder, ICAN’s director of programmes said.
“Nuclear weapons cannot be used without causing catastrophe, and the false logic of nuclear deterrence requires us to trust our enemies with our very survival,” she added.

UN chief ‘deeply alarmed by the renewed escalation in the Middle East’
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a statement through his spokesperson, expressing concern about several recent developments in the Middle East.
Guterres called on “all parties” to “fully abide by the ceasefires in Lebanon, Iran and Gaza, and to avoid any steps that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts”.
According to the statement, Guterres is “also deeply concerned by the decision by Israel to close crossings into Gaza”. He again called for the “immediate reopening of all crossings”.
He also called for international law to be respected when it comes to “navigational rights and freedoms”, in an apparent reference to shipping blockades by Iran and the US in the Strait of Hormuz.
“The only way forward is through dialogue and negotiations,” Guterres added.

Israel’s ongoing Gaza genocide enabled by US weapons, money
There has been no ceasefire in Gaza, and the money and weapons the US sends to Israel is enabling it to continue, Phyllis Bennis, a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies and an adviser for the Jewish Voice for Peace Washington, told Al Jazeera.
“And when we hear talk about the need for a regionwide ceasefire in the war with Iran, will that include Palestine?” she asked.
The kind of impunity that Israel has found, and the US has claimed in the two-and-a-half years of the Gaza genocide, is one of the things that gave rise to their will to go after Iran, Bennis said.
“As long as President Trump continues to demand a ceasefire and for Israel to stop its attacks on Lebanon but does nothing to change the practice of the US, we’re seeing a repeat of what we’ve seen in Gaza,” she said.
“Why would Netanyahu feel it necessary to respond to those requests as long as the weapons continue to flow?”
If Trump is serious about wanting a ceasefire, it has to mean he has to stop sending weapons, she said.

Save the Children Israel for closing Gaza crossings
The humanitarian children’s agency has denounced Israel’s decision to close border crossings into Gaza, saying aid should not be politicised.
“Aid is not a political tool and should not be weaponised in this way,” Ahmad Alhendawi, Save the Children’s regional director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe, said in a statement. “The survival and needs of children in Gaza should not have to answer to airstrikes elsewhere.”
Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories announced the closure of the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) and Rafah crossings into Gaza on Sunday, citing missile attacks by Iran. On Monday, it said the crossing would reopen on Tuesday.
“Children in Gaza have already been starved by design. They should not now be denied water, medicine, shelter and the other essentials needed to survive. The Israeli authorities must re-open these crossings immediately, lift the siege and facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid at scale.”
At least 21,289 children have been killed in Gaza since Israel’s genocidal war began on October 7, 2023.

Iran’s ‘new security belt’ shows regional cooperation
It’s the clearest indication yet that Tehran wants people to view the recent developments through a regional lens, rather than a national one.
It’s the clearest message to the Americans and Israelis right now. If there is any pressure in any one of those chokepoints, it’s a clear message [from Tehran] that we will defend our interests, our shared interests.
It’s threatening to disrupt shipping in that strategic waterway.

Lebanon’s displaced face deepening crisis as ‘ceasefire’ fades, says aid group
The International Rescue Committee says Lebanon’s humanitarian crisis is worsening amid intense Israeli attacks, as another “ceasefire” appears to collapse and more than one million displaced people face increasingly desperate conditions.
Rick Bartoldus, the IRC’s country director for Lebanon, told Al Jazeera that teams had been providing emergency aid since the start of the crisis, but the needs were growing rapidly.
“It is disheartening to see another ceasefire fade away, with no clear path to de-escalation,” he said.
Bartoldus said that, according to IRC assessments, 94 percent of displaced people in Lebanon cannot meet their basic needs, with many exhausting their savings after three months of crisis.
He said families were also discovering that their homes, or entire villages, had been destroyed. “The humanitarian needs are massive, and if we have any hope of recovery, we need to see a lasting ceasefire,” he said.

“Israel isn’t a punching bag for a gang of lying terror supporters who invent libels and lies against our fighters,” he was quoted as saying by the Times of Israel. “I am undeterred by this sort of investigation and will continue to stand proudly with our fighters.”
