Yemen conflict likely to become prolonged with no quick collapse on either side

Mohamed Al-Basha, founder and lead analyst of the Basha Report, says Saudi Arabia is facing growing pressure to launch a larger military operation against the Houthis, but any campaign would still depend heavily on forces fighting on the ground.

Al-Basha told Al Jazeera that while the Saudi-led coalition has not officially acknowledged carrying out air strikes, “it’s safe to say that the Saudis are providing air support”.

But he said air power alone would not be enough.

“Aircraft and firepower could suppress, could slow down the advance of the Houthis, but it’s the forces on the ground that will make a difference,” he said. “It’s not firepower, it’s not airpower.”

Al-Basha said he did not expect the United States to join the fighting directly.

“We are not at war with the Houthis. The Houthis are not at war with us,” he said, referring to the US position, adding that Washington could still support any future Saudi operation with “ISR, intelligence, refueling, logistics and military advice”.

On Houthi ambitions, he said: “The Houthis will do whatever they can do to take over the whole of the country.”

Al-Basha said he did not expect either side to collapse quickly, predicting instead “a protracted conflict” more similar to Sudan, with both sides eventually forced to negotiate.

Houthi gains expose divisions among Yemen’s anti-Houthi forces

Mohamed al-Basha, founder and lead analyst of the Basha Report, says the Houthis’ latest gains on Yemen’s west coast reflect both their battlefield experience and deep divisions among forces opposed to them.

Al-Basha told Al Jazeera that the operation began on August 9 and lasted about 30 days, with the main ground offensive starting around September 1.

He said Houthi fighters attacked several fronts in small teams, using mountain routes, ambushes and drones to overwhelm government positions.

“They’re a formidable force,” he said, arguing that anti-Houthi factions have repeatedly underestimated their military capabilities.

But al-Basha said the biggest problem facing Yemen’s internationally recognised government is internal division.

“You’re not going to be able to defeat the Houthis with a split command and control, with eight armies sort of competing over influence,” he said.

He added that foreign military assistance could help only to a point.

“This is a Yemeni conflict, the buck stops with them,” al-Basha said. “This is not Riyadh’s conflict, and this is not the US’s war.”

Iranian military chiefs warn US, Israel of swift, strong response to ‘any aggression’

Iranian army chief Major-General Amir Hatami said the United States and Israel know that any act of aggression against Iran will be met with a unified, quick and strong response from both the country’s military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

“The unity between the two forces has served as an iron shield protecting the country against enemy plots and conspiracies,” he said at a meeting with IRGC Commander-in-Chief Major-General Ahmad Vahidi on Saturday, according to the Fars news agency.

Vahidi said enemy powers have underestimated Iran’s military capacity and realised their mistake.

He said that the Iranian army and the IRGC were the two major anti-American forces that have dealt heavy blows to “terrorist groups” in recent wars, adding that Iran’s true military strength is being shown on the battlefield.

Houthis claim missile, drone attack on Saudi military base in Sharurah

Yemen’s Houthis say they have carried out an attack on a Saudi military base in Sharurah, targeting weapons depots and command-and-control rooms.

In a statement on Telegram, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the operation was carried out using “a large number of ballistic missiles and drones”, claiming the strikes were “accurate and direct”.

He also threatened further attacks deeper inside Saudi territory if the fighting continues, saying future operations would be “more severe and larger”.

Houthis blockade on Saudi vessels will affect the kingdom’s oil industry

The Houthis already held a degree of control over the Bab al-Mandeb strait before taking Mocha; they possessed supersonic and ballistic missiles capable of precisely striking moving ships in the Red Sea. They managed to hit vessels from 300 to 500km (186-311 miles) away – but now, with the shoreline and the two islands in the middle of the strait also in their hands, they can target ships at close range, as well.

They forced the ports of Haifa and Eilat in southern Israel into bankruptcy through the naval blockade they imposed on Israel during the war on Gaza, and they are positioned to do the same to Saudi Arabia – which, as we now understand, can no longer access the port. This will affect the kingdom’s oil industry, which is precisely what the Houthis are targeting: Aramco’s oil assets, facilities, and pipelines, in order to prevent the export of oil to East Asia.

Yemen and Saudi Arabia prepare to respond to Houthi takeover in Bab al-Mandeb

Both sides – Saudi Arabia and the internationally recognised Yemeni government – have said they will use aircraft to target Ansar Allah [the Houthis] in Mocha and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. This is the strategy now: to attack the Houthis with airstrikes, targeting them and any military buildup. They’ve confronted the Houthis in an offensive military encounter after most government forces in that part of the country withdrew and abandoned their positions, giving the Houthis greater capacity to advance militarily and seize more land — which is what they have done and continue to do.

With Bab al-Mandeb now under Houthi control, the group has gained leverage to make political demands of the government and Saudi officials, who are already meeting to discuss the looming threat – one that endangers their own interests as well as those of the international community. The Houthis have declared that the only ships to be blocked from Bab al-Mandeb are Saudi vessels; any other country’s ships are free to pass, according to a statement issued by the group earlier.

Israeli forces raid several West Bank towns, wounding a man in Jerusalem

The Israeli army has carried out a wave of raids across the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem, wounding one man in Silwan and raiding at least six villages and towns, according to official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

A young man was moderately wounded after being shot by the Israeli army in the Ras al-Amud neighbourhood of Silwan, south of Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to Jerusalem Governorate authorities.

In al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah, the army fired tear gas canisters and bulldozers began levelling land on the village’s eastern and western sides, opening roads to ease settler movement during the raid, according to village council head Amin Abu Aliya. No injuries were reported. Al-Mughayyir has faced repeated raids and settler attacks in recent weeks, Abu Aliya said.

Separately, the Israeli army tightened restrictions at the Atara checkpoint north of Ramallah for several hours, blocking vehicle passage and causing severe traffic congestion.
