Senegal become first African winners in World Cup

    By Hamza Mohamed

Senegal became the first country from Africa to record a win, and their fans outside Al Thumama Stadium are in a great mood.

“It was a good performance. We were focused and the team decided to play well. We didn’t let Qatar move the ball or have time on the ball,” said a smiling Pathe Toure.

“We have to play the same way or better against Ecuador. It will be like a tournament final. Now it is time to enjoy the win and the performance,” Toure added.

    Qatar fans see little improvement

Qatar fans say the team’s performance didn’t improve since their opening-day defeat against Ecuador.

“Very bad performance to be honest. Watching the match, It was obvious that they were scared,” Jassim al-Jaber said.

“There was no positive. They looked unprepared and not match fit,” he added.

Can Senegal go far in Qatar?

Africa has not had much success in recent World Cups. The last time the continent had a team in the quarter-finals was when Ghana reached the last eight in 2010.

Join our Twitter space where we will analyze how far African teams can go this year in Qatar.

Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010 – all reached the #FIFAWorldCup quarter-finals.

Can they do it again or surpass such heights at #Qatar2022?

Qatar went down fighting at least

While Qatar did lose their second World Cup game, they at least went down fighting.

That was not the case in their opening 2-0 defeat against Ecuador.

    These are the match facts.

    A better performance from Qatar

Qatar showed in this match that they really can play football.

Senegal looked brighter in the first half, but as the hosts grew into the game, they posed some real attacking threats that ultimately led to their first World Cup goal, a fine header from Muntari.

Credit also has to go to Senegal, who were playing without their star player Mané, who is still injured. Their fans were excellent throughout, bringing a real atmosphere and intensity to this match.

Senegal’s World Cup campaign back on track

Senegal’s 3-1 win in their second group match means that their World Cup campaign is back on track.

A good result for the Lions of Teranga in their game against Ecuador on Tuesday could see them advance to the last 16 of the World Cup.

Muntari goal is one that Qatar fans will never forget

They are trailing 3-1 and it will now take a big effort to prevent Qatar from crashing out of the World Cup.

    Game over?

That goal will have knocked the wind out of Qatar’s sails. The host nation had been playing well in the second half, but that was a real lapse in concentration from their defence. Sánchez does not look happy.
