It’s a wrap!
For a match everyone was eyeing from the very moment the World Cup schedule was released, it did not fail to deliver.
The end-to-end nature, coupled with some rather impactful substitutions, helped the match live up to its billing.
So, where do things stand in Group E now that the dust has settled? Spain continue to maintain their hold on the top spot with four points, while Japan and Costa Rica occupy the second and third places at three points each.
Germany will be grateful for the one point they drew today, as it means their chances of progressing into the Round of 16 are still intact.
The final round of matches within this group have just become that much more compelling after today’s result.
Do make sure to check out our detailed match report before you go, and we look forward to having you join us again for tomorrow’s set of exciting matches!

Ilkay Gundogan: “[Fullkrug’s] finish was unbelievable.”
“We had a couple of really good chances,” Germany’s Ilkay Gundogan told the BBC after the match. “In the end, the result is fair against a very tough Spanish side. Now it’s all about the final game of the group.”
“In a World Cup, you already know it’s going to be dramatic and full of ups and downs. The way Niclas [Fullkrug] scored, the finish was unbelievable. He stepped up when we needed [it].”

Alvaro Morata: ‘Could have been a semifinal or final of a World Cup’
Speaking to the BBC, Spanish forward Alvaro Morata had this to say about the match: “When we are on the bench, we are important to [help] change the game – and it [ended up] like this.”
“Germany have an amazing team, and I think it was an amazing game. [With these] two teams, it could have been a semifinal or a final of a World Cup.”
“The most important thing is to win, and tonight they scored an amazing goal. We were unlucky not to have won.”

Full-time: Spain 1-1 Germany
After a blistering last five minutes, the referee blows the final whistle.
What a match that was! Germany looked done and dusted after Morata put Spain ahead.
Realising how dire their situation was after the Japan defeat, Flick was able to make the necessary tactical switches to allow for a comeback.
In the end, the substitutes won the day and Fullkrug will certainly be a popular man back home.
Spain will not be too displeased with the result, however, as they already secured a vital three points in their previous match against Costa Rica.

Sane almost grabs Germany the winner!
A beautifully timed pass from the far left finds Sane, who executes his run superbly.
Simon is forced to rush out to confront the striker, and Sane almost sends in a pass as he slides off the pitch, but the ball ends up at the feet of Rodri who is able to clear.

German corner courtesy of defensive error
Germany are able to win a corner on the left after a header from Carvajal ends up missing Simon and the ball goes out.
Kimmich takes it but overcooks the delivery as Musiala at the far post fails to get a head on it.

Schlotterbeck with huge tackle
After receiving the ball inside the box on the right side, it looks like Morata is set to make it 2-1 to Spain as he bears down on the net.
He fails, however, to see Schlotterbeck sprinting in from behind as the German executes a timely slide tackle to knock the ball out of play.
The resulting corner is taken on the right side, but Germany are able to stamp out any further threat.

Free-kick for Germany in a dangerous area
Germany continue to attack, and after numerous attempts are rebuffed, they finally win a free-kick just outside the box on the left side.
Leroy Sane and Joshua Kimmich hover over the ball, with the latter taking the kick. He unfortunately drives it straight into the wall, which results in a corner for Germany on the left.
Nothing comes of it, however.

A German revival at the start of the second half was dented by that Spanish goal, but that was a good period for them just now. Chances missed. Will they get more?

Musiala unable to convert
Jamal Musiala makes a lovely run from the right as Germany look to equalise.
He sends in a cross towards Niclas Fullkrug but Aymeric Laporte is able to close him down before the ball reaches its intended target.
Moments later Musiala regains the ball, this time with space inside the box.
He shoots, but the goalkeeper does well to close the angle down and save.
This is much, much better from Die Mannschaft.
