This page is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates as Jordan beat Iraq 3-2 in the last 16 of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 on Monday, January 29:

  • Jordan scored two stoppage-time goals to beat Arab champions Iraq 3-2 in an incredible last-16 tie at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
  • Jordan looked down deep into stoppage time at the end of the game, only for Yazan Al-Arab to prod in for a 95th-minute leveller and Nizar Al-Rashdan to curl in a winner from a distance – booking a quarterfinal against Tajikistan.
  • Iraqi striker and tournament top scorer Aymen Hussein was controversially sent off for excessive goal celebrations after he had put Iraq 2-1 up in the second half.
  • Qatar face Palestine in the second Asian Cup game of the day at 7pm local time (16:00 GMT) in Al Khor, Qatar.
  • Australia and Tajikistan secured their passage to the quarterfinals on Sunday.

    Jordan march on

Tajikistan vs Jordan is not the quarterfinal that many were expecting but that’s what is lined up for Friday afternoon in Al Rayyan.

Jordan could only finish third in their group but they raised their game today to see off a much fancied Iraq side.

With an electric front three and a terrific work ethic, they could now be a dark horse for the tournament.

That game was absolute madness. Instant #AsianCup classic. Heartbreaking for Iraq. Very unlucky. Massive for Jordan who might be the actual dark horse of the tournament now. Incredible drama, great goals and lots of talking points.

An incredible turnaround in a matter of minutes

I’m not quite sure where to even begin in summing that game up.

If I had to pinpoint the moment that changed everything, it was most likely Hussein’s red card for his celebrations after giving Iraq the lead.

The extra man gave Jordan belief and they took full advantage.

Iraq will be devastated at the nature of that defeat but Jordan deserve plenty of praise for the composure that they showed in added time.

This Asian Cup keeps serving up classic matches.

    Full-time

    Wow.

Iraq have a huge opportunity to take the game to extra time but a chance is fired over the bar.

The referee then blows for full-time time, sparking immense celebrations from the Jordan players and fans.

Football will never cease to amaze me.

    This is incredible!

Nizar Al Rashdan has just scored from outside of the area. It was a wonderful goal, curling the ball out of the reach of Hassan.

    Utterly unbelievable.

GOAL! Al Arab levels at the death!

This is chaos! Jordan have levelled in the dying moments of this game!

Tamari takes a shot inside the penalty area. Hassan makes the save and the rebound falls to Al Arab who keeps his composure to slot the ball home.

    Jordan running out of time

This is a thrilling finish to an excellent game.

Jordan are desperate to make their numerical advantage count but Iraq are standing strong.

Ali and Iqbal are doing all they can to try and keep the ball upfield as the clock ticks down.

    Jordan keep coming forward

Nasib stoops down low to get his head to a corner, but his effort is straight at Hassan.

Al Mardi then wastes a chance for Jordan, firing over from range. He apologises to his teammates.

    Al Mardi heads wide

It’s all Jordan now as they push for an equaliser.

Haddad shows great pace to keep the ball alive at the byline. He finds Al Mardi with a cross from the right, but the Jordanian’s header lacks power and direction.

We’ve just seen a replay of Hussein’s celebration. It’s hard to see what is excessive about it. If anything, he was copying the celebration that we saw from Jordan in the first half.

Jordan look to make use of numerical advantage

Al Naimat is booked for a late foul on Bayesh to stop an attack. It’s a clear yellow card – one to file in the “professional foul” category.

Jordan now have 10 minutes to attack the 10 men of Iraq. Are we in for a grandstand finish?

    Hussein is sent off!

I can’t quite believe this – seconds after scoring, Aymen Hussein is sent off!

He picks up a second yellow card, presumably for his celebrations. It’s hard to see exactly what he did wrong there, but the referee showed no hesitation in pulling out his cards.

    What a turn of events.

    GOAL! Hussein puts Iraq ahead!

Goal number six of the tournament for Hussein and how crucial could that be!

The substitute Doski delivers a whipped cross from the left-hand side. A Jordan defender gets his head to it but it finds Hussein at the back post who controls the ball well before firing an effort into the corner of the net.
