This page is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates as USA beat Zambia 3-0 at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday, July 24:

  • The United States beat Zambia 3-0 on the first day of women’s football action at the Paris Olympics 2024.
  • Team USA scored all their goals in the first half of the match at La Beaujoire Stadium in Nantes, France, before Zambia had Pauline Zulu shown a straight red in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Unlike the men’s event – which is largely an under-23 competition and allows only three overage players per squad – the women’s tournament has no age restrictions.
  • The men’s event started on Wednesday.
  • Spain beat Japan 2-1 in our first live game of the day.

    A winning start for Hayes

Team USA boss Emma Hayes spent 12 years in the English Women’s Super League in charge of Chelsea.

The victory against Zambia marks her first win as USA manager in a competitive match.

The 47-year-old’s side has laid down a clear marker that they will be the team to stop at Paris 2024.

Men’s basketball: Team USA, format, matches, venues

Basketball became an official Olympic sport at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, although it first featured as a demonstration sport at the St Louis 1904 Olympic Games.

With football already in full swing, the next team event to grab the eye will be when basketball leaps into action on Saturday.

Al Jazeera has put together an all-you-need-to-know guide for the men’s basketball competition.

    Full-time: USA 3-0 Zambia

Zambia survive further embarrassment as USA are unable to further capitalise on their first-half lead.

USA open their 2024 Olympics campaign with a strong 3-0 showing against their African opponents.

They were easily the better side on the day, highlighted by the 27 total shots they garnered.

Zambia will be pleased with the mettle their defence showed in the second interval and will take some positives in that regard.

USA look like the team to beat in this particular competition, with Spain, France and Canada surely watching on with keen interest.

    Kundananji blocked

Banda passes to Kundananji up top after the break is made from the other end.

At the very last moment as she looks to shoot from inside the box, the ball is sent away for a left-side corner by a defender.

Siamfuko provides the service, but ends up curling it towards Naeher, who hardly has to move as she collects the ball.

Meanwhile, we will have four minutes of stoppage time.

Krueger cross fails to find Dunn

Krueger whips in a cross towards Dunn at the far post on the right side.

However, she overhits the chance, with Dunn unable to latch onto it.

Musole would have surely have been beaten if Dunn had connected.

    Kundananji down

Similar to what happened to Smith in the first half, the medical staff tend to the afflicted player as both teams take the opportunity to hydrate.

The magic spray is delivered, and it looks like the Zambian midfielder will press on.

    USA look to increase lead

Given the stiff competition they face in the group, they will be looking to add to their margin as much as possible as we head into the final 10 minutes of regulation time.

Krueger almost finds that opportunity, but her near-range shot pings off the back of a Zambian defender.

Coffey is taken down just outside the box, left of centre.

With the multitude of changes made, USA are attacking with even more intent given all the fresh legs on the pitch.

Zambia continue to rely on the efforts of Mupopo and Banda up front. They have had precious few chances, and are struggling in the final third.
