Athletic Bilbao vs Real Madrid 0-3: La Liga – as it happened

Real Madrid ended a three-game winless run with a commanding 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao, thanks to two goals and an assist from the talismanic Kylian Mbappe.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice and set up another as Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 to cut Barcelona’s La Liga lead back down to one point on Wednesday.

Xabi Alonso’s side curtailed a run of three consecutive league draws away from home with one of their best displays of the season at Athletic’s San Mames Stadium.

Mbappe opened the scoring early on as Trent Alexander-Arnold provided his first La Liga assist, with Eduardo Camavinga nodding in the second before the break.

French superstar Mbappe slammed home another in the second half for his 16th league goal of the season to seal Madrid’s victory.

One negative for Los Blancos was apparent injuries for Alexander-Arnold and Camavinga in the second half, with both players replaced on the field.

They host Celta Vigo in a league game on Saturday before facing Manchester City at home in the Champions League four days later.

Real are fifth in the Champions League standings, four spots above City.

They host Atletico Madrid in Saturday’s league game before facing Paris Saint-Germain at home four days later in the Champions League.

Bilbao are 27th in the Champions League standings, while PSG are second.

“They beat us in the duels. All I would say is that we lacked everything, and they beat us in terms of goals, defensive duels… they were just stronger than us,” Lekue told DAZN.

“We tried to play our game… we tried to be intense, press high, steal the ball and generate chances, but we just couldn’t do it one way or the other.”

After the game, Lekue spoke to DAZN.

Asked about what the team lacked in the game, he said: “Everything. Especially in the first half, they [Real] were much better than us in terms of finishing. When we were playing our best, there were two or three clear chances, and two brilliant saves from Real’s goalkeeper.

“They were superior.”

Today’s 3-0 win against Athletic Bilbao snaps a run of three draws in a row.

Before this match, Real drew 1-1 with Girona, 2-2 with Elche and 0-0 with Rayo Vallecano.

Barcelona are on top of the standings with 37 points, from 15 matches. They took the top spot from Real Madrid, who drew three games in a row before this win at Bilbao.

Real stay second, with 36 points, while Villarreal are third with 32, albeit with a game in hand.
