  • Portugal’s Francisco Trincao came off the bench to score twice, and Cristiano Ronaldo also netted as they beat Denmark 5-2 after extra time at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon for a 5-3 aggregate win that sent them through to the UEFA Nations League semifinals, where they will face Germany.
  • With the Danes leading the tie 1-0 thanks to Rasmus Hojlund’s goal in Thursday’s first leg in Copenhagen, Ronaldo won and then missed an early penalty before Portugal took the lead on the night in the 38th minute, thanks to an own goal from Danish defender Joachim Andersen.
  • That goal was cancelled out by a Rasmus Kristensen header in the 56th minute, and though Ronaldo gave the home side the lead again with a finish from a tight angle, Christian Eriksen put Denmark back in front on aggregate in the 76th minute.
  • Trincao then took over, scoring in the 86th minute to make it 3-3 on aggregate and force extra time, before netting again in the 91st, with Goncalo Ramos adding Portugal’s fifth to send them through to a final-four meeting with Germany, who beat Italy 5-4 on aggregate.

    It’s a wrap

Portugal deliver the goods with a 5-2 performance in Lisbon to book a Nations League semifinal spot in June.

Denmark, despite being considerably outplayed today, will take plenty of positives for what was an absorbing two-legged affair.

Seven-goal affair pushes Portugal into semis

After trailing 0-1 following a rather insipid first-leg performance in Copenhagen, the Portuguese roar back to life with a comprehensive 5-2 drubbing.

With 18 shots, of which 11 were on target, they were the far better team on the day. They easily could have had a few more if it wasn’t for Schmeichel’s doggedness between the sticks.

Despite fluffing an early penalty, Ronaldo got onto the scoresheet nonetheless, adding the proverbial cherry on top for the home fans.

GOAL! Ramos scores. Portugal 5-2 Denmark (5-3 aggregate)

Ramos ends Danish dreams in Lisbon! Trincao plays a through ball to Jota inside the box, on the right side.

The Liverpool forward spots an incoming Ramos down the middle and squares a pass across. All Ramos has to do is tap it into the open net, which he does with consummate ease.

Ronaldo pumps his fist as Portugal are into the Nations League semifinals.

    Schmeichel makes vital stop

Portugal execute a counter the other way, with Jota spearheading it. As he enters the box, he squares a pass towards Fernandes. He fires on the run but slips in the process as he reaches for the ball. Schmeichel is able to just tip the chance over the bar to force a corner.

The corner is taken from the right side, but Portugal are unable to make anything of it.

He is putting in a heroic shift, regardless of the current scoreline.

GOAL! Jota scores. Portugal 5-2 Denmark (5-3 aggregate)

Ramos delivers a delicious curling through ball from the deep to a racing Jota up front.

With just Schmeichel to beat, Jota rounds the keeper before turning and firing towards the open goal, despite losing his footing at the end.

Schmeichel looks to have done his shoulder in the process. There is also a VAR check for a possible offside, so the crowd hold their collective bated breath.
