  • Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain beat German giants Bayern Munich 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup despite ending up with only nine players on the pitch, to book a semifinal tie with either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund.
  • An eventful first half at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta finished goalless despite chances for both sides, including a header by Bayern centre back Dayot Upamecano that was chalked off for offside.
  • The entertaining half was marred at the end when Bayern forward Jamal Musiala sustained a suspected broken ankle after a collision with PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
  • PSG’s Desire Doue finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute with a smartly taken strike, but four minutes later the French side went down to 10 men after Willian Pacho was sent off for a dangerous foul.
  • Bayern poured on the pressure in the final minutes, and Harry Kane had a goal ruled out for offside, while PSG went down to nine players two minutes into stoppage time after Lucas Hernandez received his marching orders for throwing an elbow into Raphael Guerreiro’s face.
  • As Bayern pushed for an equaliser, PSG broke on the counter deep into stoppage time and Achram Hakimi wriggled away from several Bayern players to tee up substitute Ousmane Dembele, who lashed a right-footed strike into the corner of the net.
  • Bayern were awarded a penalty at the death after a high boot by Nuno Mendes appeared to catch Thomas Muller’s head, but it was cancelled after a VAR review showed the PSG left back only made contact with the ball and PSG held on for the win.

Hakimi talks about beating ‘direct rivals’ Bayern

“We are really happy and proud of the team effort. We had a tough team against us, I think we did what we had to do to take the victory,” Hakimi told DAZN.

“Bayern were one of the direct rivals we could face in this competition … they play similar to us. They were like our straight rivals, but we did well today. A good game.”

Hakimi and Marquinho also sent their good wishes to Musiala, who suffered a serious ankle injury at the end of the first half.

Dembele’s ‘FIFA celebration’ an ode to Jota

PSG substitute Dembele celebrated his late goal by copying the “FIFA celebration” that Diogo Jota used to do.

Asked about the gesture, Marquinhos said: “It was really difficult to take the news [of Jota’s death]. Of course, we have Portuguese players in our dressing room, and they were with him in the national team some days back when they won the UEFA Nations League. It has been really tough to cheer them up.

“Jota deserves all the tributes in the world.”
