Goodbye
That’s it from our coverage of the men’s javelin final at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo.
The night belonged to the Americas as Keshorn Walcott rolled back the years to bag his first Worlds gold, followed by fellow Caribbean native Anderson Peters of Grenada. Curtis Thompson of the United States finished third on a rainy and breezy night at the Japan National Stadium.
There were no final-round finishes, but plenty of disappointment for India’s Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, both of whom could not cross the 85-metre (279-foot) mark.
Sachin Yadav of India and Rumesh Pathirage of Sri Lanka shone bright with their respective fourth and seventh-place finishes.
There’s plenty more live sport to come from our team, including football and cricket.
Thanks for joining me, Hafsa Adil, for our live coverage of the javelin finals.

A win for the Americas
With Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago), Peters (Grenada) and Thompson (USA) finishing on the podium, it’s a win for the Americas in a final that was hyped to be a South Asian affair.
That’s how it goes sometimes.

What is Neeraj Chopra’s personal best throw?
The Indian athlete could not repeat his performance from earlier in the year, when he landed a 90.23-metre (296.03 feet) throw at the Doha Diamond League on May 16.

What is Arshad Nadeem’s personal best throw?
While Nadeem wasn’t able to finish amongst the top athletes today, he did manage to blow away the competition at the Paris Olympics 2024, where he also broke the Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 metres on August 8, 2024.

The winner, Walcott, will bag $70,000, while Peters will be awarded $35,000, and Thompson, the third-placed finisher, will earn $22,000.

No Chopra-Nadeem moments
While previous global and regional athletics events gave us plenty of feel-good Chopra-Nadeem moments, the two South Asian athletes mostly kept out of each other’s way at this year’s World Athletics.

First Worlds gold for Walcott
While the Trinidadian has won an Olympic gold in the past – at London 2012 – today’s win brings him a first World Athletics Championships gold.
In fact, the 32-year-old had never won a medal at the Worlds before tonight.
Surely, he won’t mind the wait.

Walcott wins gold
The man from Trinidad and Tobago has not improved on his best throw tonight, but still takes gold in Tokyo.
He had the crowd’s support, as well as Peters’s, as he ran in on a wet and slippery runway.
Not a lot of emotion on show from Walcott as the Caribbean islanders finish first and second.
