Spain defeated Uruguay, but it might have come at a cost.
Substitute Yeremy Pino landed awkwardly when challenging for a ball late in the game and has reportedly injured his shoulder. Furthermore, reports out of Spain are suggesting he was visibly upset at full-time and in quite a bit of pain.
One to watch.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has spoken after his side’s 1-0 win over Uruguay.
”We have overcome three incredibly tough matches. We have known how to play a different kind of matches,” de la Fuente said after the match.
“The team always responds. Today we knew how to play a different kind of match.”
More from Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa in his post-match press conference (translated from Spanish to English):
“No one is interested in hearing any explanations, and from my position as the person responsible, that’s completely understandable. If I’m analysing what happened, then I have to include our mistakes, because mistakes are part of football.
“We simply weren’t efficient enough – we didn’t convert enough of the chances we created, and we conceded too many goals.”
Reports of unrest in the Uruguay camp emerged earlier in the week, and with them now being dumped out of the tournament, it’s fairly likely that legendary head coach Marcelo Bielsa won’t be in charge for much longer.
He has spoken after the game and revealed to journalists that experienced goalkeeper Fernando Muslera had asked to be subbed off at half-time following his costly error.
Having won Group H, Spain are now looking likely to face Austria in the Round of 32 – although as we know, things can change very quickly at this World Cup.
If it’s not Austria, then it will be Algeria – those two play each other in the final match of Group J and Spain are drawn against the runner-up in Group J, with Argentina having already won the group.
Brilliant scenes emerging from Houston, where the Cabo Verde players were watching the closing stages of the Uruguay/Spain game after drawing with Saudi Arabia.
Gathered around the assistant coach’s phones, the players erupt after the full-time whistle blew in Guadalajara.
They now get to face Lionel Messi and Argentina in Miami in the Round of 32.
Magic!
Spain weren’t at their clinical best today – but in truth, they didn’t need to be.
Uruguay finished the game with just one shot on target and even that was a routine save for Simon.
Spain dominated the ball and only had one shot on target themselves, but they never really looked troubled.
Full Time: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
Incredibly, Cabo Verde are through to the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup in their first appearance at the tournament.
Three draws was enough for them to finish second in the group after it finished goalless between them and Saudi Arabia.
Uruguay needed just ONE goal in the end. It wasn’t to be.

Spain win the group, Uruguay crash out of the World Cup at the group stage for the second consecutive tournament!
Full Time: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
I said tempers were flaring and Canobbio has just been shown a straight red card.
He’s flown in with his studs up, and while it doesn’t actually look that bad, it probably won’t be overturned.
Canobbio is now being ushered down the tunnel as he tries to confront the fourth official.
They’ve lost their heads.
90+6 mins: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
There’s roughly 90 seconds left here.
90+5 mins: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
Williams is running clear and is scythed down by de la Cruz.
Tempers have flared now. Uruguay are two minutes away from being sent home.
90+3 mins: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
Uruguay have FIVE minutes to save their World Cup campaign.
I’ll be honest, I don’t think it’s going to happen, folks.
90 mins: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
Time is running out for Uruguay, they need to get the ball into the box.
They appeal for a penalty, but nothing is given. It looked like a foul on the Spanish defender.
89 mins: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
Oh, that was the moment.
Ruiz and Torres play a lovely one-two on the edge of the box. Torres receives the return pass, his touch away from the defender is great, but he goes with too much power and his shot clips the bar as it flies over.
Huge chance.
86 mins: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
De la Cruz picks the ball up in the middle of the Spain half, takes a touch and drills a powerful effort towards goal, but Spain keeper Simon is equal to it.
85 mins: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
As things stand, Spain are going through as group winners.
Cabo Verde are currently drawing 0-0 with Saudi Arabia and would go through in second place, but a goal there could change things drastically, especially if it’s Saudi Arabia who score it.
Uruguay are currently third in the group on 2 points and are going home.
84 mins: Uruguay 0-1 Spain
