Trump hits out at US media outlets, calls for praise on Iran

The US president has renewed his attacks on US news outlets over what he sees as critical coverage of his Iran policies.

“The Failing New York Times, FAKE NEWS CNN, and others, just don’t know what to do,” Trump wrote in a social media post.

“They are desperately looking for a reason to criticize President Donald J. Trump on the Iran situation, but just can’t find it. Why don’t they just say, at the right time, JOB WELL DONE, MR. PRESIDENT, and start to gain back their credibility???”

Ceasefire in Lebanon offers needed respite to war-weary population

Heiko Wimmen, project director for Iraq, Syria and Lebanon at the International Crisis Group, told Al Jazeera the ceasefire in Lebanon offers “badly needed respite” to a population battered by months of war, particularly the Shia community, many of whom have been displaced.

UN figures estimate that more than a million people have been driven from their homes by the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel.

Wimmen noted that relief at the end of Israeli attacks is widespread, but not evenly felt.

“While thousands of displaced, mostly Shia southern Lebanese, pour back to their areas in jubilation and often with displays of triumph, for those who oppose Hezbollah, relief mixes with concern that the group will feel newly emboldened,” he said, adding that it would not break Hezbollah’s entanglements in regional conflicts.

No confirmation from Iran following Trump’s announcements

    By Ali Hashem

    Reporting from Tehran, Iran.

There is no confirmation from the Iranian side regarding Trump’s claim that it is never going to close the Strait of Hormuz again and that it is going to hand over highly enriched uranium.

What we understand from sources is that preparations are going on for another round of negotiations, including a provisional framework lasting 45 to 60 days that would tackle several issues including the fate of the highly enriched uranium.

There are no updates we can rely on at this moment and we’ve had conflicting reports in the past, so we’re going to have to wait and see.

What we know about the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire

    By Priyanka Shankar

Israel and Lebanon have announced a 10-day ceasefire to allow negotiations for a more permanent security and peace agreement to continue.

The ceasefire, announced by Trump on Thursday, follows six weeks of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. In its war on Lebanon, Israel has killed at least 2,196 people and displaced more than one million.

But on Friday morning, Lebanon’s army reported several ceasefire violations by Israeli forces.

Will the ceasefire last? What are its terms? Read everything about it here.

Hezbollah bloc slams government talks with Israel, but expresses support for ceasefire

Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc has cautiously backed a ceasefire — but only if comprehensive, covering all Lebanese territory, and serving as a prelude to full Israeli withdrawal.

The bloc credited Iran with securing the ceasefire, saying it “was achieved primarily against the backdrop of Iranian pressures and diplomatic contacts.”

The group sharply condemned the government for entering direct negotiations with Israel, warning that the authorities have placed Lebanon on a “dangerous path of concessions” they cannot deliver.

“The government has reneged on every commitment it had previously declared as a prerequisite for entering into any negotiation process,” it said.

Lebanon-Israel ceasefire demonstrates Trump’s leverage with Israel: Analyst

The speed at which the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire was agreed upon demonstrates the leverage Trump holds over Netanyahu when he chooses to use it, says Michael Hanna, US programme director at the International Crisis Group.

“As with earlier episodes in his second term in Yemen, Iran and Gaza, Trump has demonstrated his ability to bring Israel into line when Israeli policy has threatened his own priorities,” Hanna told Al Jazeera.

Like other analysts, Hanna downplayed the prospects of a more comprehensive agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, but said the ceasefire in Lebanon improves the chances of de-escalating the wider regional war.

Ceasefire process will proceed step by step

    By Ali Hashem

    Reporting from Tehran

The ceasefire is developing step by step. The ceasefire in Lebanon is linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

Now these two events have taken place, there are other issues to be addressed for the full opening of the strait.

Trump says there is still a US blockade. In return, there is still this military blockade which Iranian officials have told state TV.

The most important thing is that the Iranians foresee that the next round of negotiations should announce the end of the war in the region completely.

But these step-by-step movements should play out in the coming days, where both sides should be able to put together a framework with several points, which can lay the grounds for further negotiations that can extend the truce.

Israel has ‘not yet finished the job’ against Hezbollah: Netanyahu

Israel has not yet finished dealing with Hezbollah, Netanyahu said, pledging to press on with the Lebanese group’s “dismantling” just hours after a 10-day ceasefire came into effect.

“We have not yet finished the job. There are things we plan to do to address the remaining rocket threat and the drone threat,” he said in a recorded address, saying a key objective was the “dismantling of Hezbollah”.

This comes as Trump said in a social media post that Israel will not be allowed to bomb Lebanon any longer, adding that “enough is enough!!!”.

US wants to keep pressure up in Iran with naval blockade

    By Alan Fisher

    Reporting from Washington, DC

The chances of the US lifting the naval blockade were never particularly high, as the Trump administration sees that as a way of putting more pressure on Iran.

Trump says there are still a few outstanding issues, but the main point for him is ensuring it has no nuclear weapons.

If Iran does give that assurance, what they will get in return is the big question. They’ll want to know that if they give something quite significant, they’re getting something in return.

There is nothing here suggesting JD Vance is about to fly to Islamabad and abandon his trip to the Western part of the US. But we know from what we saw with the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, that work could be going on behind the scenes at the State Department to try to put things in place.
