Relief and joy for home side
There will be relief and joy in the Qatari camp after keeping alive their dreams of a home title win. Oh and there will be some celebrations as well before the team and its fans begin their preparations for Wednesday’s semifinal against a strong Iran side at Al Thumama Stadium.
Qatar’s played and lost one of their three World Cup 2022 matches at the venue. Will they mark their return to the stadium with a win this time?

The stats
Qatar shaded the stats but Uzbekistan had more shots on target.
It was a tight tie and penalties were perhaps inevitable.

What could have been
South Korea 🇰🇷 Jordan 🇯🇴 Iran 🇮🇷 and Uzbekistan 🇺🇿 would’ve been an ultimate #AsianCup2023 semifinals. An East Asian team, an Arab team, a Persian one and a central Asian one. A cohesive diverse reflection of Asian football. Still, a fantastic tournament. Qatar v Iran it is 👍🏽

‘Penalties are like a lottery’
Uzbekistan striker Odildzhon Hamrobekov says the team could not have given any more.
“We came to the pitch to win but a penalty [shootout] is always won by the team who have more luck,” he told the official broadcast.
“Everything was perfect at the Asian Cup – all the organisation – so I would like to thank them.
“I would like to express my gratitude to all the support given by the fans.”

What a shootout!
Such drama.
It swung to Uzbekistan, but then Barsham came to the rescue with three saves to swing it back the other way.
